New York Times runs story from rightwing website banned by FREE REPUBLIC
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 03:12 PM by geek tragedy
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/24/politics/campaign/24points.html

<snip>To Bush-bashers, it may be the most infuriating revelation yet from the military records of the two presidential candidates: the young George W. Bush probably had a higher I.Q. than did the young John Kerry.

That, at least, is the conclusion of Steve Sailer, a conservative columnist at the Web magazine Vdare.com and a veteran student of presidential I.Q.'s. During the last presidential campaign Mr. Sailer estimated from Mr. Bush's SAT score (1206) that his I.Q. was in the mid-120's, about 10 points lower than Al Gore's.
<snip>

How rancidly racist and offensive is Vdare.com?

Vdare.com articles are banned on the FREE FUCKING REPUBLIC!!!!!!!

16. RWers were intent on establishing a fascist state in America at that time,
just as they are today.

It is a very good sign that so many major newspapers, despite intense pressure by the RW, are not endorsing Bu$h and the republican-fascist movement which seeks to end our democracy.

“A clique of U.S. industrialists is hell-bent to bring a fascist state to supplant our democratic government and is working closely with the fascist regime in Germany and Italy. I have had plenty of opportunity in my post in Berlin to witness how close some of our American ruling families are to the Nazi regime. . . . “

"Certain American industrialists had a great deal to do with bringing fascist regimes into being in both Germany and Italy. They extended aid to help Fascism occupy the seat of power, and they are helping to keep it there."

- William E. Dodd, U.S. Ambassador to Germany, 1937

We absolutely must not allow Bu$h to retain power.

5. Please. Even Bush's fans admit that he's not a brain.
They try to say that makes him more "likeable". Whatever.

Is there anyone who actually thinks Bush's I.Q. is above average? I'd give him an even 100, tops. But it's probably more like 90-95.

6. They aren't implying that Bush actually "took" either of those tests
are they? I am surprised that Daddy didn't buy him a better IQ. I myself have an "extra degree" in business (sarcasm) that I have as the result of papers and classes I wrote for a successful local politician. I was well paid for it. And you can't evaluate an IQ using his methodology. The newspapers ought to be ashamed of themselves for publishing such drivel!

7. Seems to be a lie.
If he's claiming that Bush scored 1206 on the SAT, he's lying. SATs are scored in increments of 10.

9. This was in Kitty Kelley's book.
I wonder where she got the figure? This is what she said:

"Having made it through Andover without flunking, George felt he had earned the right to go to Yale. Despite what Andover officially called his 'unremarkable record, and an SAT score of 1206, he became the beneficiary of his family's connections. He was accepted at Yale with the class of 1968, and he made no apologies for his good fortune. In fact he bridled at the 'intellectual arrogance' of those who denigrated him as a legacy kid. He told his classmate Robert Birge that what irritated him most about 'Ivy League Liberals' was their sense of guilt about being born to privilege. As an Andover graduate and a member of an established Yale family, George W. Bush headed for New Haven, where his peers perceived him as part of the ruling class on campus."

11. SATs weren't scored in increments of 10 back in the 1960s.
I wish I knew what year the scoring system changed, but my dad got a score that wasn't in an increment of 10 back when he took the SAT.

Mine, from 1960, were 643, 687, 613, and 653 (V, M, EN, AM). That paired score of 1330 would be a 1390 in today's scale. Not particularly exemplary, either.

OTOH, it put me in the 98%ile of college-bound seniors.

12. Also, it's important to consider drug use.
GWB may have had a high IQ when he was young, but decades of subsequent alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana abuse would certainly have lowered it.

10. Even if it is true that Kerry's IQ is lower, it's irrelevant.
What makes a leader successful is having good EMOTIONAL Quotient. I highly recommend reading Emotional Intelligence by David Goleman. In it he points out the examples of John F. Kennedy and Jimmy Carter. JFK had an IQ of only 100 to 105, yet he's considered one of the best presidents this country has ever had, due to his high Emotional Quotient. Conversely, Carter was one of the smartest men ever to lead this country but had a mediocre EQ, and he's considered by historians to not have been among our greatest presidents.

13. The SAT does not measure intelligence
It's shocking to see a "reputable" publication claim otherwise. And this is coming from someone who performed substantially better than *.

15. I think bush was smart - 35 years ago
when he took the test. He was a poor student but he had a good mind and was a good speaker back then, from what i've read. But it's all ancient history now. Maybe it was the 20 years of heavy booze or whatever, but his mind is gone now.

17. I can't believe John Kerry could get into
law school and pass the bar with only an "average" IQ. (And Bush couldn't get in at all.)

My regret is that Kerry has to dumb-down his message and delivery so he can connect with voters.

18. Completely bogus
Even assuming that the correlation between SAT score and I.Q. was really high, why would an 80th percentile SAT score equate to a 95th percentile I.Q. score? That is besides the fact that SAT can change dramatically with study and practice, but I.Q. is supposed to be relatively constant.
