"Blow 'em all away in the name of the Lord": Falwell
Did anyone else hear Falwell say this today? I'm looking though my New Testament--nope, don't see that quote anywhere. Here's something about enemies, though--Love your enemies. Oh, wait, here's Blessed are the peacemakers. Oh, and, Love is patient, love is kind. Am I missing something? Am I completely wrong about Jesus? Could a follower of Jesus say this sort of thing?

22. Ecclesiastes--not New Testament.
Fundies love to quote the Old Testament. Funny, I thought being Christian meant that you accepted the New Testament as the word of God--superseding the old.

As in:

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

26. HA,
ok, my sister, fellow DUer "Birthday," who IS a Christian, will get a kick out of that. It's about the only bible verse I even remotely know - seeing as how I'm agnostic!

Perhaps I should just stay quiet on the biblical threads! :D

2. Not a follower of Jesus
Maybe he never thought to read the update to the Old Testament. Someone should help the guy out and give him a version of the new testament.

3. How long will it take ...
... until the religious right goes so far off the deep end that America is shocked out of its slumber and forces them back into the margins and under the rocks again?

4. No, you are not wrong
the Prince of Peace, Breath of God, the beloved Jesus, spread a message of peace and social justice. Lovers of God and His Messengers realize that hatred closes the heart and veils it from the Light of God.

posts about this but to flood this board wouldn't be enough for me. That statement was outrageous - simpley outrageous and sickening.

11. Honestly, how does he square what he says with what Jesus says?
Maybe an eye for an eye was part of the Old Testament, but Jesus says, You have heard an eye for an eye, and I tell you Love Your Enemies and pray for them. Didn't Falwell get the updated version?

21. Even under the Old Testament 'eye for an eye'. . .
Falwell fails the test. Though most see this as a call for revenge, it's better seen as an admonition for fair justice: When an injustice is done to you, only exact punishment in equal measure to the offense. So for Falwell to advocate killing everyone and 'letting the Lord sort it out,' flies in the face not only of Christian beliefs, but goes against Old Testament precepts as well.

There are special circles in Hell reserved for those such as Falwell, places not imagined even by Dante.

7. Though he invokes his name all the time, Falwell has nothing to do with
Jesus nor his message. Falwell is an X-tian.

13. Who said he was a follower?
Anyway, people like him tend to love on their own terms. They set limits and make conditions.

By the way, did you see the really nice suit and rings (pleural) that he was wearing? I'm thinking that he's going to become the next religious scandal.

"We have had signs torn down, signs stolen, signs desecrated. We've even had signs telling people not to take our signs torn down," said Laura Bland, spokeswoman for the Virginia Democratic Party. "In little Lynchburg alone, 300 signs have been stolen or vandalized."

23. This was on CNN today, right?
I thought that was what he said, but I had the sound way down and wasn't sure.

I think CNN is doing a special on religion tonight at 8 eastern. Perhaps the segment aired today wass from that.

Falwell is a dangerous lunatic. CNN shouldn't have him on, unless they're holding him up to ridicule.
