The Guardian runs oped with joke about assassination - Right go nuts
The Right are going ballistic over an oped column in The Guardian, joking about assassination.

What's funny is that some are pissed at Drudge for repeating the offending comment !

LOL !

1. And some of us here didn't like such "jokes" either.
I find little humor in assassination.

2. Saw the article.
Figured there would be some serious fallout over the Booth-Hinckley et al comment.
Not smart.
Not even funny.

3. The article was pretty funny but that last bit
about assasination was over the top, I thought.

4. And yet try googling "assasinate" and "clinton"
And you will find scores of web pages calling for the assasination of Bill Clinton, countless jokes about it, and people who think that Tim McVeigh was an American hero.

And, hell, G Gordon Liddy advises someone on the best way to kill a Federal Agent, and he wins an award!

and defend Koresh as well.

I just recently read a comment on FreakRepublic hoping that Kerry's campaign plane met the same fate as Wellstone's

Several there thought that was pretty funny.

7. Drudge: " at least as reckless as the aforementioned drunk"
and they prosecuted him. Drudge, anything for hits. Discussion of assasination is vile.

9. The Moderator on C-Span read it this Morning!
I was pissed! For years I have been angered that they quote from all of the RW rags and never use the far more credible foreign press. Especially right before the war! The first time I hear the Guardian quoted it is this shit to stir up the wingers!
FU brian lamb!

13. The kind of lame "joke" that provides ammunition to the Right
Soon as I saw this I thought, "counter-productive," and "thanks alot."

I don't believe we should watch our every utterance for fear of what the Reichpundits will do with it, but do we have to go out of our way to wrap it up with a bow and present it to them as a gift?

Obviously, I was offended by nothing in the op ed

16. It was actually a TV review, not an oped
And this kind of comment is quite common in Britain - The Observer today suggested torturing the Lord Chancellor, and Rory Bremner suggested boiling a British politician alive tonight on TV (I think it was Jack Straw, but I can't be sure). Both were comments on the Uzbekistan torturing.

19. That is certainly the case -- but their jokes are very tame
compared to the mean-spirited comments said about Democrats on the freeper sites. I'm embarrassed just thinking how the freepers will represent our country -- if the Brits don't understand that we've got a couple of nutcase factions in this country (freepers & fundies), they will get the picture when their hate mail arrives.

said he was about to bomb the Soviet Union? Back then, everyone had a bit more of a sense of humour, especially right wingers.

18. I fail to understand the outrage
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 06:00 PM by NoPasaran
Years ago in school I remember learning about a speech given in the Virginia House of Burgesses that ended

"Caesar had his Brutus, Charles the First his Cromwell. And George the Third..."

{cries of "Treason!}

"...and George the Third may profit by their example. If this be treason make the most of it!"

The speaker was Patrick Henry, who I think came down through history with a pretty good reputation.
