Hype and Glory, USA Today. Critique of voter tactics and attack ads.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/columnist/shapiro/2004-10-24-hype_x.htm

SNIP.."COLUMBUS, Ohio — Moments after worshipers entered the Pentecostal Potter's House Church of God on Sunday, they were offered a copy of the ostensibly non-partisan "2004 Christian Coalition Voter Guide." The cover of the four-page pamphlet contrasts George W. Bush's and John Kerry's positions on 15 policy questions, including such issues lacking an apparent religious hook as "affirmative action programs that provide preferential treatment" and "placing U.S. troops under U.N. control."

This is a long article, actually pretty good.

This part just jumped out at me, as Mary Jo Kilroy posted at the blog tonight about this ad against her that is blasting Howard Dean. It is totally shameless.

SNIP..." Bush, or Kerry for that matter, cannot compete with an ad for Republican Franklin County commissioner candidate David Goodman that charges that incumbent Democrat Mary Jo Kilroy shockingly enough endorsed Howard Dean in the Democratic primaries. The commercial even features a now-almost-nostalgic replay of Dean's infamous Iowa-caucuses-night scream...."

HOWEVER, Dean and Mary Jo show how you fight back. Dean made a radio ad with her.

Howard Dean and Mary Jo Kilroy in studio, when Howard recorded
a radio spot in response to an attack ad run by Mary Jo's opponent:

"I'm not running for Franklin County commissioner, but Mary Jo Kilroy is...
We're both fiscally responsible. We both know that strong economies start with
good jobs and decent pay. We both work to deliver healthcare and have
strong records of success. You can learn more about how Mary
Jo fights for Franklin County families by visiting maryjokilroy.com."

1. Mary Jo's post about the ad, and a link to her website in Ohio.
http://www.blogforamerica.com/archives/005399.html

SNIP.."Dean Dozen member Mary Jo Kilroy is a candidate for County Commissioner in Franklin County Ohio.

I want to thank DFA for all the support you have given me in my race for County Commissioner here in Franklin County, Ohio, the swing county in this swing state. Campaigning has been great, but as election day gets closer and campaigning intensifies, it appears that my opponent's strategy is to attack me and try to get the stay-at-home conservative voter to vote for him and Bush this election. He also needs to distract voters from the campaign finance scandal that has been growing here and involves his former consultants.

The first attack was for my support of SEIU. He charged that there was something "threatening" in having a county commissioner support the right of low-wage workers to organize and join a union, and my suggestion that the employer might find out that cooperation with SEIU might prove to be a benefit to employer, workers and patients.

Now his TV ad has hit, and incredibly his attack is on Howard Dean! He is running a 15-second spot that goes after me for endorsing Gov. Dean in the presidential primary. It includes grainy pictures and the so-called "scream."

SNIP.."As Governor Dean said yesterday during his visit to Columbus, "I'm not running for Franklin County commissioner, but Mary Jo Kilroy is... We're both fiscally responsible. We both know that strong economies start with good jobs and decent pay. We both work to deliver healthcare and have strong records of success. You can learn more about how Mary Jo fights for Franklin County families by visiting maryjokilroy.com."

I am proud that I am a Dean Dozen candidate, and I will continue to fight for what matters...."

5. And it will take a long time. I agree.
I think though that we will be surprised at how well some of the Dean Dozen do, ones who were not expecting it. On AAR the other day he sounded very pleasantly surprised at how well things were going just out of the gate. It is all so new.
