"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." |
|
Just compare those words of a great American President spoken at a time when the nation faced its greatest crisis since the civil war - 25% unemployment, mass bankruptcies, widespread bank failures, and a natural disaster (the "dust bowl") in the Midwest that made this year's hurricanes look like an amusing diversion - with the disgraceful fear mongering of the Bush/Cheney administration. Great leaders call on a nation to face the future with confidence. The Bush/Cheney gang preys on the public's fears, trying to exploit them for their own political advantage. The contrast between John Kerry's message of strength, hope, perseverance, and the ultimate endurance of democracy and individual rights and the Bush/Cheney meesage of fear, danger, and the need to sacrirfice our rights and freedoms to ensure our safety could not be more stark, more vivid, or more obvious. A message of hope and optimism will always win over a message of fear and despair.
"Those who would sacrifice essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Ben Franklin
