shook hands with the next president of the US this evening
we - my teenage son and i - went to the Kerry rally in warren michigan today. the doors opened at 4, and Kerry was scheduled to speak at 6:45. we got there around 5, and the line was looooong! thousands of people there - all crazy about John Kerry! it was heartening, to say the least. anyway- we stood in line for about 2 hours, mostly stood, sometimes moved...and then, when we were fairly close to the door, people started walking by saying that the doors were closed, and no one else was getting in.

well, i couldn't believe that, there were still so many of us standing outside in the cold. we saw Kerry's helicoptor circle, and then not land... everyone was talking about it, trying to figure out what the hell was going on, as it was now after the time that he was supposed to start. so, we over heard a policeman say that they had made room for 3000 more, and we would be going in.

when we went in the door, no one asked for our tickets, and there was no metal detector or bag checking ... hmmm... i thought. they herded us all into a gym - obviously not the place Kerry was going to be speaking there were speakers, over which we could hear the faint music of bon jovi. i overheard someone ask what was going to happen in the gym, and the guy said he couldn't say anything because of security.

cool, i thought! they are going to bring Kerry in here. i scoped the room, trying to figure out where he would come in, so we could position ourselves accordingly. well, sure enough we saw some secret service guys come out of the locker rooms, and moved thru the crowd in that direction. next thing you know, John Kerry comes into the room, and the room went crazy! we were so smooshed, but we had our hands out - i knew i wasn't going to see him speak, but damn i was gonna shake his hand! and i did! as did my son - he got a great shake! being over 6' tall and having long arms helps in a situation like that. i watched the handshake over the top of my head, and i'm quite sure that my son got "the full handshake treatment." i was most pleased that at his first ever political event, he hit pay dirt! ;-)

anyway, Kerry said that he had to go give his speech - or something like that - nothing he said could have been heard in that room - everyone was too busy cheering and chanting and clapping. anyone who says that people only support Kerry because they don't like bush is full of it. these people love the man!

he blew us kisses, raised his arms to mad cheering, and then left.

the feeling i came away with - Kerry is not going to disappoint people. i mean, it may seem obvious that a politician would hesitate to leave voters who had been standing in line for hours (and it got cold!) out of the building, but he obviously heard that there were lots of ticket holders still waiting to get in - he checked it out himself, and adjusted his plans to make what accomodation he could to make it worth the effort it took to come and see him. i was well pleased - true i did not get to hear him speak, but we got closer to him than we would have otherwise, and got the desirable and much sought handshake! it really is rather cool to shake hands with the next president of the united states. cooler still that my teen son did! he can't wait to go to school in his new Kerry t-shirt tomorrow, and talk about his experience tonight as his current event.

we did leave before he gave his speech - i didn't drive 60 miles through rush hour traffic to hear him over speakers whilst standing in a gymnasium (plus, we missed the inevitable parking lot gridlock) - so i can only talk about how he looked, and how the crowd loved him. he looks great! much better close up, in person than on the television. i hadn't realized that he was such an attractive man! and he definately displayed a certain sparkle. we, the audience, were assured that Kerry cares about us, and that he was disappointed that we were disappointed - yes, even tho he couldn't say a word that could be heard, he conveyed all that.

he did good! i've had my reservations about Kerry in the past. after the debates, i was most assuredly a full fledged supporter. after tonight, i am looking forward with enthusiasm to pulling the lever (or touching the screen, or whatever it is we do in my district) for John Kerry! taking the time to take care of us instead of closing the door in our faces, shaking my sons hand, thereby making this one of my most memorable and special political events ever, and really, just being so fantastic for 5 minutes or so with people that would vote for him no matter what... well, it was just wonderful, and i was well pleased.

1. Sounds like a great event with awesome turnout - thanks for the first-hand
account!
Wish Kerry would come here to the Kato vicinity; I can't afford the gas to drive elsewhere to see him...

6. the turnout was awesome
obviously higher than expected! (that's another small perq - we get to hang onto our tickets as memorabilia! ;-) )

i wish Kerry could get everywhere before the election. he was great in this setting - vibrant, charismatic, and so confident and presidential! the more people that see him, the better turnout will be on voting day.

7. Wish I could have been there with you and your son. I took 3 of my
grandchildren to see Al Gore in 2000 and they were thrilled to shake hands with him (I even have pictures of them shaking hands with him)

16. ah! you have pictures!
i am filled with envy! i had my camera, and snapped numerous pics! unfortunately, if you are a short woman (as i am), when it comes to a situation like we had this evening, the best you can do is lift the camera up, point it in the direction you hope to get a picture, and snap. being in a tight crowd means guaranteed jostling... well, i got a couple of great pics of the perfectly parted hair on one head, and several other pictures that look like an acid trip. i saved a couple of the pictures because i just know that is John Kerry behind that arm with the colorful bracelets. ;-)

4. Thank you, thank you both
Living in Houston, TX, I don't think I will ever see my friend (not really but I know I would like Mr. Kerry), our future president John Kerry, so I live vicariously through your story! I'm happy for your son as well-savor this, in this very serious election!

10. i used to live in houston!
hey, at least you wouldn't be shivering waiting in line in the early evening ;-)

i think Kerry probably has a very full schedule between now and election day - he appeared with the big dawg earlier today before coming to michigan, and who knows where he will be tomorrow! - and if i understand correctly, he is appearing where he still has a chance to influence the outcome of the election (tho i thought that MI had been taken out of the "battlefield" status). personally, i think he can make a difference anywhere he appears - even in houston! but, after he's elected, i'm sure he'll visit many places! i hope you get a chance to meet your friend! like you, i'm pretty sure i would like Kerry, and i am positive that i could become fast friends with his wife!

11. Dear Shugah:
I'm elated to hear your story! My family and I were inside the arena. I got there around 4:15 and waited in line for about 2 hours. My nine year old was a basket case by the time we got inside.
I was very concerned for those that didn't get in, and there were A LOT, at least as many as those who did get in. Bon Jovi was definately just an opening act, as we were all anxious to hear the future Pres.!
He was a little hoarse, but he spoke for about a 1/2 hour and ended with the new tag line "I've got your back", which I like much better than "Bring it On".(Always hated that one, for obvious reasons!)

Well we took off just as his speech ended (the nine year old was near psycho by this time). And didn't hang around.
I'm SO GLAD you got to shake his hand!!!!!!!
I was worried that ill feelings would be created by underestimating the crowd, but you got the best end of the stick!

14. i'm happy to hear from you too PassingFair!
earlier today, a fellow Duer (MrsGrumpy by name - thanks again MrsGrumpy!) let me know some of the important details about this appearance - that Kerry wouldn't speak until 6:45 (it must have been considerably later than that, as he was shaking our hands around 7:30), and that bon jovi was the entertainment- that helped me decide that my 4 year old simply would not enjoy or appreciate being there.

there were alot of us left outside when the auditorium reached capacity. ALOT! probably at least 3000 - which was the happy number we overheard the policeman mention. and you're right, i would have been totally pissed off if i had been turned away. i had tickets! and had been looking forward to being there since the i got the tickets.

and that's very much what i meant about Kerry when i posted this thread - it was really great that he thought about the rest of us, as you did. we all came to see him, and he made sure that we did!

but i am still wondering how it was at the rally proper. how was the speech? was it mostly what we hear in the media soundbytes? did he zing bush? did he address issues? jobs was one of the things i had hoped to hear him talk about. 1/2 hour is not that long, but i imagine he must be tired (he did not look it when i saw him). how was the crowd? could you feel the jubilation?

15. He wasn't in the best voice,
as you can imagine, but he bashed the heck out of Bush. Ask Mrs. Grumpy what it sounded like from the inside....I called her on my cell and let her listen!
He talked about the missing explosives and hit all the major speaking points. Hey, he's no Howard Dean....but he'll do!

12. It was a great event
I probably walked the length of that line 3 times, recruiting volunteers. Anyone who tells you it was fewer than 15,000 people is nuts.

All the speakers were great- The Levins, Dave Bonior, Jim Blanchard, John Conyers, the Union leaders, Governor Jenny. And I'm not a Bon Jovi fan, but he ws good, and the crowd loved it.

Of course, the main attraction was pretty good, too.

17. Kerry rallies 10,000 at Macomb County stop
Mon, Oct. 25, 2004

WARREN, Mich. - Several thousand people gathered at Macomb Community College cheered wildly while Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry promised a new approach to the economy and jobs as the campaign for the White House entered its final full week.

<snip>

Kerry campaign spokesman Rodell Mollineau said another 5,000 to 6,000 people had to be turned away from the Macomb County rally that featured rock star Jon Bon Jovi

we were not turned away, and we were not there because of bon jovi! sheesh!

19. "and there was no metal detector or bag checking"
OMG! Very sloppy work on the secret service part make sure to forward this onto the Kerry campaign because the wrong element could take advantage of this information.
