Should Pres. Kerry reform the UN?
I think its time for a massive overhaul, and I think Kerry at some point in time should propose changes in structure. maybe a permanent rapid response UN force. maybe give more weight to developing countries? maybe new permanent members like India, Japan, or Germany on the security. Right now, I dont think its as effective as it good be.

2. I guess he could
if we owned the UN but we dont so he cant there are several other countries that have the same veto power we have Russia, and France Im sure would have issues with us changing the rules at the UN.

3. Or you could just look up
the UN plan for massive changes to suit the 21st century already in the works...has been for sometime, but crises keep holding it up.

Kerry, btw, would be president of the US, not the UN.

4. I heard Bill Clinton wants to be Sec. General of the UN
In effect, he could be President of the world. I think it would be great! Most of the people of the world love Clinton. He could reform a lot of things.

6. Well Democrats love Clinton
but that's not most of the world. And Clinton couldn't reform anything on his own. It is a global body. There are 191 nations involved.

10. Haven't you seen the pictures?
Whenever Bill Clinton visits a foreign land, third world, western world, or eastern world, he is always greeted like a savior. It's amazing how everybody in the world seems to know who he is, and love him. It seems like the only people on the planet that don't love him are the Republicans.

5. This suggestion strikes me as...
... cultural/national bias. Why should Kerry alone force changes on the UN? It's supposed to be a world-wide deliberative body.

There's nothing wrong in suggesting changes, but your thread title says, "Should Pres. Kerry reform the UN?"

The US does not have the overriding right to "reform" the UN.

The main problem with the UN security council to date is the veto power possessed by the five original members. Simply adding security council members won't cure that.

Cheers.

7. Two questions:
1) Can he actually do that?
2) Doesn't the US owe a ton of overdue dues to the UN?

Just wondering.

8. maybe you misunderstood me
i never said that reform of the UN was the sole responsiblity of the American President nor did I say Kerry would yield the power to do whatever he wants. Im saying should he create a vision, talk about ideas, inspire, and work with other countries to implement needed changes. maybe he can be a modern day Wilson.

9. If the US threw its weight behind reform
instead of against it then that would be a big boost to getting it done. That, I suspect, was your intention not that Kerry would do it all by himself just cause he wanted to. To answer, Yes, I think he should, but I don't think that he will.
