Social Democrats are basically progressives with Marxist tendencies. Communists are authoritarian socialists, like Lenin who despised Democracy.

...but I am also not an anti-communist. It is a flawed organizing principle for a society, as is unfettered capitalism. Decent societies should be trying to find the proper balance between the two ideals.

Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 01:11 AM by Solon
Though I do wonder when the time will come when the question would be:
"Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Democratic Party?"
This question has been asked twice for blacklist purposes in the past, first for Anarchists, then Communists, if * has his way, it will be a third time.

24. No, but when I was going to Young Democrat meetings at Virginia Tech... |
|
...We had a couple of exchange students from the Glasnost-era Soviet Union who hung about.
Embarassing true story: one of the guys was from Moscow--all Russian, all Communist Party. The other guy didn't get along so well with the Russian. One drunken night, he patiently tried to explain to me that he was Ukranian, and that he was only a Party Member so that he could come to the United States. One day the Ukranians would secede from the Soviet Union, he said, and become independent.
I couldn't get my beer-addled mind around the concept that this little Commie bastard Russkie was none of those things.
Man, did he ever show me to be the fool.

I'm often mistaken for one, as apparently only about 20 Americans understand the difference between communism and anarcho-syndicalism (hint: one doesn't involve a coercive state forcing you to cooperate).

Was a card-carrying CPUSA member, though. EVERY party has its "fringe elements." I was a liberal one, and I refered to the Far Right Wing CPUSA'ers (YES, we DID call them RIGHT WINGERS) as "MAOISTS" or "STALINISTS." "LENINISTS" we not quite as extreme, and they all looked down on us "MARXISTS."
Factions, factions, everywhere, everywhere.

Point well made. There is a difference between communism and marxism. Unfortunately, even socialism needs a strong central government. Can you imagine trying to keep conservative types from trying to exploit workers without a strong government?

All the CPUSA members I've met were as rigid as born agains in their ideology. The Trots were (and are) a good bunch though.
This sounds like a red-baiting thread to me.
