Eminem Vs. Madonna - EMINEM WINS FOR COURAGE!
Remember the "American Life" Video Madonna re-shot because it VAGUELY seemed critical of Bush's war?

Now Eminem's new video "Mosh" comes out swinging, and doesn't let up. I was blown away by it, personally, and I don't really like hip-hop OR Eminem.

But he deserves major respect for this artistic and human statement.

And fuck Madonna for being such a coward. She has more money than God, and she still chickens out. To hell with her and her Kaballah and her tutors and her pretty-boy husband and their little pretty life in England.

1. I agree...
though, I have never known Eminem to bow to any pressure yet, and apparently isn't going to anytime soon, you have to respect that. Check out his video "White America" also on GNN, or any of his other songs, and movie "8 Mile".

2. Remember
Madonna's video came out when the political atmosphere was truly stifling. Pre-F911, pre Air-America.

Now Eminem's video is part of a whole body of work by many different artists that criticize President Jerk-wad & Co.

And thanks to all of them for it.

I wouldn't go so rough on The Material Girl. But, whatever.

5. Actually, American life was well after 9-11.
It was during the buildup to the Iraq War - the whole message of the vid was supposed to be anti-war, anti-nationalism. At the time she said " I have decided not to release my new video. It was filmed before the war started and I do not believe it is appropriate to air it at this time. Due to the volatile state of the world and out of sensitivity and respect to the armed forces, who I support and pray for, I do not want to risk offending anyone who might misinterpret the meaning of this video."

8. It was pre F911
which I think means Fahrenheit 9/11.

9. Ah, didn't see the "F" and don't see the relevance.
Despite being something of a fading star, Madonna's got a lot of media power left, and she chooses to use it for silly girl-girl stunt kisses with soon-to-be has-been pop-tarts rather than on something that actually matters. If anyone could've gotten away with it, Madonna could have. But I guess that's why she's started to slip - she's just going through the motions these days...

10. Well, that was when Bush was pretty popular
and you would pay for criticizing him, like Dixie Chicks.

13. Their album sales slumped for a couple weeks then rebounded.
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 11:13 AM by UdoKier
They sold out their concert tour to standing-O crowds.

And keep in mind they did so despite a NEAR-TOTAL radio blackout.

The Chicks are doing just fine.

3. Women don't get away with stuff like that like men do
Look what happened to the Dixie Chicks. Or Roseanne when she did that national anthem thing, or Sinead O'Connor. They were excoriated in the media and their careers were damaged, at least for a while. Men are given more leeway to express opinions forcefully. Women who do it are considered scary.

6. Sorry, but this is Madonna we're talking about.
She could live like a queen from the royalties on the "Like a Virgin" album alone for the rest of her life.

She is a worldwide star, she sells more albums outside the US than inside. She had very little to lose by making a statement.

Your sexism angle is little more than a straw man, since Madonna has never shied away from silly superficial "controversy" of the type that riles religious nuts. But now that her audience is growing older and more staid, she's afraid to shake up their sensibilities with anything that's actually real. Sad.

7. Far less than 45%.
She is a GLOBAL superstar and would have undoubtedly INCREASED her sales outside of the US.

To those who mention the DIxie Chicks, have you forgotten that they SOLD OUT a tour, and recovered and kept their album in the top 10 charts for MONTHS AFTER the Clear Channel boycott? The Chicks gained a whole new huge audience.

12. They briefly backtracked, which sucked.
But they quickly went back to being defiant against Tobey, the brownshirts and Bush. I forgave them for the wrongheaded apology.
