NORTH CAROLINA Oct. 21 Oct. 7 Sept 21 Sept 7 Aug. 23 President BUSH 51% 50% 52% 50% 49% Senator KERRY 47 47 47 47 50 Nader/Undecided/Other 2 3 1 3 1
MOE +/- 3.1 percentage points
Mr. Bush has held on to a small majority here, but there is evidence of an ever-so-slight tightening in the race here, due to a slight increase in pessimism. While 52% felt the nation was heading in the right direction two weeks ago, just 50% think so now. Fifty-two percent said Mr. Bush is doing a good job in Washington.
Mr. Kerry now leads by five points among women, a two-point improvement over two weeks ago, but Mr. Bush holds an edge among independents that gives him the advantage in the home state to the Number Two man on the Democratic ticket.
Forty-six percent of woman think the country is headed in the right direction, a bad sign for Mr. Bush that is mirrored across the nation. But it is countered again here by the optimistic male species, 54% of which said things are on the right track. Seniors here are uncharacteristically pessimistic – 48% said things are off track.
BACKGROUNDER: This is another southern state that loves to thrash Yankees who come calling. The last time a Massachusetts pol came here asking for votes for President, they gave a not-so-polite reply, defeating him by a humiliating 62% to 38% defeat. Even Republican Bob Dole won this state in 1996, defeating incumbent President Bill Clinton. Fellow southerner Jimmy Carter was the last Democrat to win this state in 1976. North Carolina Sen. John Edwards’ presence on the Democratic ticket could make a difference here.
NORTH CAROLINA ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTES: 15
What I have always found in North CArolina is when they don't like the republican candidate many will stay home and refrain from giving their vote...If that happens acording to what I see here , we MAY win this state, People here never mention Bush..they don't wont to talk politics that an indication that he is not liked, we had and have a lots of unemployment, the state University System has had to raise tut. I think about a thousand dollars since Bush took office.

<People here never mention Bush..they don't wont to talk politics that an indication that he is not liked,>
I'm one of those strange homeschooling liberals. :) so I get to hang around around with a lot of religious and political conservatives. (lucky me) They are NOT talking about Bush trying to get me to change my mind. In fact, they let me do the talking when the war has been brought up. No one defends Bush at all. I guess they really can't but that is beside the point.
I am sad to say that my neighbor will vote for Bush for one reason - abortion. She thinks he will abolish it. Even as I made points that she agreed to, she is still voting for W. (She is proud to say she is voting for Easley) I told her I didn't have my sons so they could be aborted in a war. I had to walk away.

3. NC is going to surprise |
|
We haven't gone dem since Carter, but judging by signs and stickers during a cross-state drive last weekend, I'd say that Kerry's support is stronger than I would have expected. I went to Asheville from Raleigh along the I-40 corridor, and counted many more Kerry stickers and signs than * ones. Asheville itself was very pro-Kerry.
Downtown there on Friday they had a "silent protest", about a dozen "women in black" holding a banner protesting violence against women. For some reason, some moran decided to bring his family to stand in front of them and hold * signs.
Since when is violence against women a partisan issue? Do Bushies support violence against women?
Looking forward to when I can stop saying "WTF?!?!" so often...
