the November "Vanity Fair" is the best $4.50 I've spent this year . . .
where else can you get a great issue of a great magazine PLUS a compilation CD for that price? . . . some of the highlights . . .

The Path to 9/11: Lost Warnings and Fatal Errors
An investigative article by Ned Zeman, David Wise, David Rose, and Bryan Burrough that strongly suggests that the attacks could have been prevented.

Order the Fish by Eric Schlosser
The author of Fast Food Nation focuses on "the public-safeety nightmare Bush's USDA won't face: widespread contamination in the meatpacking industry.

The Trashing of John McCain by Richard Gooding
Has McCain joined the team that engineered his destruction?

The Plot to Sell the News by Michael Woolf
The author argues that journalists are in massive denial about the business they're in: packaging.

with the theme of the issue World Music, you also get . . .

U2's Unforgettable Fire by Lisa Robinson
Extensive article about the band that's stayed together over a quarter century.

American Anthems by John Mellencamp
Listing great protest-song writers from Woody Guthrie to Marvin Gaye, the author argues that America was founded on anger -- and the hope for change.

Joni's Last Waltz? by Elvis Costello
Extensive article and interview in which Joni discusses retirement, her career, Ira Gershwin's musical missteps, and the value of the waltz, among other things.

Rock the Globe
A gorgeous 40-page photo spread featuring leaders in world music today.

and you get a great compilation CD (courtesy of DKNY jeans) that features songs by Ryan Adams, Joseph Arthur, Jill Sobule, The Roots, Steve Earle, Julie Roberts, Marc Broussard, Patti Scialfa, The Jayhawks, Sonic Youth, Nellie McKay, Keane, Loretta Lynn, Tift Merritt, Ricky Rante, Sam Roberts, and Jamie Cullum.

and all for $4.50 . . . highly recommended . . . :)

3. could not agree more
VF has been printing devastating critiques of the Bush regime for months now, but the Nov issue might be the single best issue of any monthly I've ever read. I also laughed my ass off at the satirical "journal" of the soldier posted at the ranch in Crawford -- where Bin Laden and Saddam are both residing as pampered guests who spend their time playing board games with 41 and Babs and watching The Apprentice. Now that's comedy (or IS it...hmmmmm????)

5. You didn't mention Johnny Depp!
He's on the cover & there's an interview inside.

"Vanity Fair"--the thinking person's "People Magazine".

Actually, I don't own any of their records.

I don't think I would like it very much at all.

9. And the editorials alone this year
have been worth the price of a subscription to me. Graydon Carter has kicked *'s ass each and every month.
