Conservatives vow lengthy boycott of Proctor & Gamble over gay rights; company disputes their claims
DAVID CRARY, AP National Writer

Tuesday, October 26, 2004

(10-26) 11:25 PDT (AP) --

Two powerful conservative groups hope to extend indefinitely an election-related boycott of Procter & Gamble Co., contending that the consumer products giant is too supportive of gay rights and urging customers to stop buying Crest, Tide and Pampers.

Procter & Gamble, while proud of its reputation for recruiting and supporting a diverse work force, says boycott organizers have deliberately distorted the company's positions by suggesting incorrectly that P&G has endorsed same-sex marriage.

According to the Mississippi-based American Family Association, more than 287,000 people have signed onto the boycott since the AFA and the Christian ministry Focus on the Family announced the campaign in mid-September. They asked supporters to stop buying P&G's top-selling brands of toothpaste, detergent and disposable diapers.

1. Well now. It looks like both sides should be boycotting them.
They were on the list of Sinclair advertisers, too!

4. We didn't exactly "win"..
They still broadcast a freebie hit-piece on Kerry.. It was not as long as they wanted, but they still did it..and it cost the GOP, ZERO $$$...and they got tons of free advertising via the news..

3. And this is a new thing?
Hell, I've heard fundie conservatives bleating about boycotting P&G for literally decades now. First it was about P&G's "satanic" moon and stars logo, then starting in the late eighties it started trending towards P&G's view on homosexuality.

This is just another big yawner. The people who would participate in this boycott are already doing so, and have been for awhile. Those who aren't participating won't be swayed by this new information.

5. Isn't P&G boycotted by the animal protectionist crowd?
Gee, you'd think P&G would be bankrupt...if all these boycotts actually worked.

6. WTF? Are these people idiots?
Go to MANY corporate web sites and you will more often than not - in the "why it's good to work for us" section - find them list gay rights groups that have awarded the company for something they have done for the gay community or gay employees.

Do these fools have bank accounts? I wonder if they are aware washington mutual, bank of america, wells fargo, and a host of others (dare I say almost every major bank) list their recognition received from gay rights groups.

Guess they better start closing their check and savings accounts now.
