Help Me Swing this "Weak" Bush Voter
Alright DU'ers, here is the scoop.

My Spanish teacher is 37 years old, divorced single mother of 2, a Venezuelan immigrant and her mother lives with her. She has previously supported Kerry/Edwards but for some reason has switched to the Bush column in the past week. :(

I have seen some "Unidos con Kerry" signs and seen the focus that John Kerry has put on the Hispanic vote. This lady is DIAMETRICALLY opposed to the Venezulan president, Hugo Chavez. I mean she hates him with a passion and when she returned home to Venezula on vacation, she marched in the streets in protest to him. I figure that if anyone knows of a Bush-Chavez tie, that will seal it and send her back to Kerry. If not, think of something else!

* She says that Senator Kerry "scares" her and all that stupid BS. I asked her how scared she was that 380 tons of explosives could now be in the hands of terrorists. Her response: I don't know. :wtf:

I may not be able to find this topic again since there are so many posted each day. So if anyone comes up with a good line or statement to tell her, send it to me in a PM as well as posting it in the public forum. Thanks, BamaLefty.

2. its a bitch
when you talk sense to these folks and they can't respond. I think it must be a personality defect. MoveOn Pac has a reprint of the full page NYT ad with nine folks who voted for Shrub in 2000, are voting for Kerry now. Maybe you could contact them locally and ask for one, or find it on the web. Keep on trying, love ya.

3. BamaLefty, another thing you might want to do is sit down with her and
ask her what issues worry her the most. Go over each one with Kerry's stance versus Chimp's stance. Sometimes just sitting and talking about the issues help's someone understand them. I had to ask a few people myself about what does Kerry mean by this...

And, yes, Fahrenheit 9/11 would be good as well.

Jennifer

4. Tell her to do it for the students,
Bush is building 14 military bases in Iraq. How do you think he is going to man them ,with robots so that means there has to be a draft. Kerry Wants to get the troops out as sooon as possibel but Bush wants a military presense in Iraq for the long term. Why do you think they are so slow at traing Iraq army

7. Iraq War
She sees that the Iraq war is all about oil as well... I don't know what her problem is.

8. Ask if she wants
Bush to "liberate" Venezuela the same way he has "liberated" Iraq. Or does she want Bush to do for Venezuela what he has done for Haiti?

Personally, I don't think there is much chance of gaining an anti-Chavista for Kerry. Thwarting democracy by any means possible is right up their alley. Right-wing controlled media is what they demand. Keeping the overwhelming majority of the population in desperate poverty is their idea of the perfect society. They have refused to work within the fledging democracy in Venezuela, preferring to court the resurgence of military rule instead. They are Bush's kind of people, IMO.

10. I know, and I am not happy about it
I intend to ride herd on President Kerry. Things must change, and they had better change now.

I think Riverbends post today nails the situation with her Monopoly game metaphor.

11. She is one of the Venezuelan elites?
That would explain her hatred of Chavez. It's not the poor that march against and protest the Venezuelan President. These people are just like bush and cheney and the rest of the corporatists.

If I was going to make an appeal to her, I would appeal to her religion (I think it worked for me today with one of my sons' teachers).

We talked and agreed that this war was illegal and based on lies (you know the details by now I'm sure). I spoke for a moment about God and Jesus Christ, especially what Christ would think about all senseless killing going on now, and what we were both taught in our southern baptist upbringing and how we both know right from wrong. Then I asked her to just ask herself two questions.... can you support someone, who in your heart.. you know is doing wrong? And (this one I got from Reagan)...Are you better off now than you were four years ago? If you can and your are.. then vote for bush.

It got to her, I could see it in her eyes. I've used the Reagan line on republicans a few times now.. they still react to it.
