Can't change presidents if we are at war??!! |
|
Every now and then I peep the rightwing sites. I keep reading over and over this opinion that a president can't be taken out of office during wartime. If we get attacked before the election, then the presidency can't be changed.
Where the hell do they get this crap!!? What, do they just make up rules? I'm nonplussed that people really believe this shit.
There's nothing in the constitution that says we can't change presidents during a war. We changed several times during the Vietnam war.
The rightwing is so desperate they are getting stupid.

3. Haven't there been elections during every other war? |
|
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall learning of elections ever being cancelled in wartime.

4. well, they're addicted to war |
|
it is the only way they can feel better about themselves. In the end, like every other addiction, it just ends up making things worse for them.

5. To say that they are "getting stupid"................... |
|
would imply that at one time they were not stupid. Very faulty thinking there. I can't remember a time when Republcans were anythng but stupid.

6. Perhaps they think Bush* has started WWIII |
|
and he has to be like FDR and have 4 terms to undo the whole FDR deal.
It's bats.
Of course - the longer Bush* stays in - the more it will seem like WWIII and the worse off we'll be.

7. We're changing presidents *BECAUSE* of a war... |
|
A war launched on false premises. A war that enables and strengthens terrorism. We sure as hell can change presidents.

8. they'll latch on to whatever lame-ass excuse they can |
|
if the situation were reversed they be saying that you HAVE to change presidents if they start a war. their mind is already made up; they're justifiying that decision.

9. The last time we changed presidents during a war |
|
was during Vietnam. Johnson refused to run, Humphrey lost and Nixon won. We not only changed presidents, we changed parties in power. But it still did no good. Nixon just prolonged the war (after saying he had a "secret plan to end the war" as a campaign promise). It finally ended when we pulled out after Nixon resigned, under the Ford administration. Gee, that was TWO changes of presidents!

10. Simple. We're not at war. Go ahead and change horses. |

This administration is sending our fellow citizens to get killed or maimed, but we're not at war. They've done NOTHING to put this country on a war footing. Quite the contrary:
No tax hike to finance a war - in fact, four tax cuts No mobilization of industry to equip for war - in fact, no-bid sweetheart contracts No draft to man the war - in fact, reinforced a no draft policy No rationing to supply a war - in fact, encouraging civilian consumption
In every war America has fought (and won), there has been at minimum a draft and tax increases.
Go ahead and change horses - we're not at war. If we are, it's the worst-run war EVER.

13. Good points all, I'm another that is sick of this |

"but we're at war" shit. During the Second World War, the U.S. government intervened in the economy as it never had before. The War Production Board was created to coordinate the nation's productive capabilities so that military priorities would be met.
Converted consumer-products plants filled many military orders. Short on flak jackets? I'm sure we could have found some plant to make more of them.
Automakers built tanks and aircraft. If this is a war then they should have re-tooled to add armor to humvees.
The newly created Office of Price Administration controlled rents on some dwellings, rationed consumer items ranging from sugar to gasoline, and otherwise tried to restrain price increases. Citizens sacrificed, and were proud to to their part.
Contrast this to a local radio hack who brags about how much petrol he consumes using his 2 SUV's to haul his lard ass around town. Was he first in line to answer his country's calling, you ask? Of course not, but he WOULD be the first to complain if we rationed his precious gasoline.
