Documented: The Coming ELECTION CHAOS - & Groundswell
Edited on Thu Oct-28-04 09:57 AM by Eloriel
It's going to be a humdinger, folks. What follows is a collection (not all-inclusive) of threads on DU about current and anticipated voting and legal problems, the groundswell of support on both sides (but esp. ours, I think), newspaper and personal endorsements for Kerry, and assorted other indicators of what a turbulent, altho IMO ultimately victorious, election this is going to be. Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

My original thread got archived in my absence during a computer outage, so this is a 2nd version -- and the (non-all-inclusive) link collection only goes back a week or so. I hope to keep it updated, and please feel free to add to it as well as keep it kicked. BTW, NONE of these are from any of the State Forums or from GD2004 -- these were taken just from GD and LBN. Unfortunately, they're not in any particular order, tho the first ones I'll post are from my original thread so are older. Also, expect many of the older links to be unavailable while the archives are down. I'll be adding these in several posts....

Edited to add the all important:

Pledge of Action to Stop A Stolen Election
"I remember the stolen presidential election of 2000 and I am willing to take action in 2004 if the election is stolen again. I support efforts to protect the right to vote leading up to and on Election Day, November 2nd. If that right is systematically violated, I pledge to join nationwide protests starting on November 3rd, either in my community, in the states where the fraud occurred, or in Washington DC."

Explanation/Commentary by Medea Benjamin:
Stolen Election? This Time Around, Let’s Be Prepared by Medea Benjamin
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/1025-34.htm

After months of traveling from swing state to swing state, I have been astounded by the number of people who are furious with the “war president” George Bush, and have dedicated enormous energy to registering, educating, cajoling, and exhorting people to vote. Californians have invaded Nevada, New Yorkers have flooded into Pennsylvania, folks from Massachusetts have adopted New Hampshire, and here in Florida, there is a deluge of activists from all over the country. These anti-Bush organizers, many of whom have no formal connection with the Democratic Party, will be out in full force on November 2, knocking on doors, chauffeuring voters to the polls and guarding polling places. It is likely that a massive turnout among young people, single women, African Americans, and newly registered and infrequent voters will make Kerry the winner.

The real question is: Will the election be free and fair or will we see a replay of 2000, with voting in key swing states like Florida and Ohio marred by significant fraud? Unfortunately, too many signs are pointing towards a replay of 2000. But this time, there’s a big difference: We’ll be ready!

In November 2000, disenfranchised voters, victims of butterfly ballots and hanging chads, and others angry at the state’s refusal to count every vote spontaneously started to protest. Black ministers were preparing parishioners to engage in non-violent civil disobedience to affirm their voting rights. Unwitting “Jews for Buchanan” were marching on the streets of West Palm Beach demanding a recount. Union reps, civil rights leaders and even Green Party members like myself converged on Florida to join the movement that proclaimed: “Every Vote Counts, Count Every Vote.”

But the leadership of the Democratic Party put the kabosh on our organizing efforts. “This matter will not be determined by rabblerousers in the streets,” they said, “but by professional lawyers in the courts.” We saw the outcome of that strategy: four disastrous years of an unelected president.

Our right to vote is too preciousand precarious--to be left in the hands of lawyers, judges and Democratic Party chiefs. This time around, it’s up to us, the people, to defend our democracy.

Daily Endorsement Tally: On 'Super Sunday,' Kerry Makes Huge Gains
New York Senator John Kerry continued his raid on newspapers that backed President George W. Bush in 2000, grabbing 17 new "flip-flops," as well as The Washington Post. He has now won over at least 28 papers that went for Bush in 2000, while Bush has only earned two Gore papers.

However, Bush got a real prize in Ohio, the Columbus Dispatch.

Kerry now leads Bush 112-69 in endorsements in E&P's exclusive tally, and by about 14.4 million to 8.6 million in the circulation of backing papers.

GOP charges voter fraud in Ohio
"What this is really about is that we have hundreds of thousands of new voters in the state of Ohio and the Republican Party is terrified these people are going to come out and vote," said Jess Goode of America Coming Together, or ACT, one of the canvassing groups lambasted by the Republicans. "The truth is, the Republican Party is undertaking the largest voter-suppression effort ever undertaken in Ohio."

Columbus Dispatch: GOP Challenges (35,427 Ohio) Voters
In yet another sign of how fiercely Ohio will be contested in the Nov. 2 presidential election, Republicans challenged 35,427 newly registered voters yesterday. And both parties named thousands of people to be challengers at the polls.
<snip>
But overburdened elections officials were left wondering how to comply with a state law requiring a hearing on each challenge no later than two days before the election.

Those who have been challenged must receive a letter by first-class mail no later than three days before a hearing to answer the challenge - with a lawyer and witnesses, if they choose.
<snip>

The Repubs harvested the addresses from all newly-registered voters then sent out mailing to all of them. Any mailing which came back undelivered was automatically challenged.

The good news: over 700,000 new voters signed up statewide.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - One of the state's biggest broadcasters has given 13 Republican county committees $325,000 worth of free air time to promote candidates on its radio and television stations throughout California.

Pappas Telecasting Cos., which calls itself the largest privately held broadcast firm in the nation, made the donations earlier this month. Democrats complain the offer unfairly benefits GOP candidates in violation of federal law.

An attorney representing Democratic Assemblywoman Nicole Parra, who is seeking re-election in a close race against Republican Dean Gardner, sent a letter Saturday to Pappas demanding equal time.

13. excellent!
thanks for all the time and effort!

I still can hardly believe what we are looking at, the term "messy" hardly does it justice. I hope it doesn't come down to outright "chaos". Just the way people are stealing each others lawn signs says a lot about the state of mind we find ourselves in.
The break down of civility is alarming. But I suppose when groups such as Amnesty Int. point out that Bush's "war on terror" has eroded human rights and led to violence and torture around the world, it shouldn't come as a surprise.

BTW. I'd be interested to know if someone has set up a sort of 'virtual' map of voting problems around the country.

Tallahassee Mayor John Marks said he realizes the city may play center stage for the second consecutive presidential election....The city has crafted an "election fallout" plan - a collection of security measures, traffic plans and a set of media controls - that many hope will eliminate some of the chaotic situations that happened in 2000, when hundreds of media from around the world descended on Florida's capital. The city is also planning a public-relations rush to take advantage of the potential media blitz.

34. A couple more more
and a chance to kick this, since I'm not getting a lot of help with that (hint, hint).

One thing this has done for me -- aside from convincing me we may not know who the "winner" is for day or weeks or ?? -- is to make me feel a little optimistic about this. It's not that I ever thought Kerry wouldn't get the most votes (and the most electors), but I've been concerned about all the vote suppression ALREADY ongoing, and vote fraud that I know in my heart is planned. But I'm thinking we just might pull this off with the INCREDIBLE mobilzation we've undertaken. I'm heartened too that our people are talking it up (vote suppression, etc.) and have lawyers lined up in so many places. We just might do this, folks -- and that's exactly what I've been thinking it will take: our voters in numbers that overwhelm THEIR vote suppression/fraud systems. Cross your fingers.

I have a bunch of your threads saved on my hard drive for reference. I chose the print option, then I mail it to myself.

43. Maybe we should prepare to flood CNN with this information.....
on election night. If things don't go well, we can take down their system.

46. Kick!
This is a great resource. I was going to just cut and paste for myself so I could read off line, but most of the links are either archived DU threads or truncated links, and I just don't have time to follow every one to re-paste it.
