2. They showed McGovern so far behind that he
Dropped Ad buys and kept over a million dollars in contributions. It was legal then to keep any excess that the campaign didn't spend. I am not sure when they changed that law, but I would bet Nixon planned on leaving the White House rich because of it.

They were also allowed to donate their papers to the library and take a deduction for their value. LBJ had a real windfall over this one. Nixon tried to backdate his tax return to deduct his vice-presidential papers when they changed that law and got caught on it.
