Argued with fundies at work; it was awful.
Today at work I asked a co-worker, who is a Democrat, a big-hunter, and a guy I knew voted for Bush in 2000, who he was voting for. "It's not John Kerry" he said. I asked why and he said, "I believe in the sanctity of life." We then had to part for 4 hours; when we got back together, I asked him if he supported the death penalty and the war in Iraq. He said "Yes" and could not give a coherent answer about why. I told him he's not really "pro-life" then. Drawn by the words "abortion" and "morality" we were throwing around, two fundies approached and chimed in pro-Bush comments every now and then. I'd logically point out the inconsistencies in his argument, ask how he could explain the greater morality of the wealthiest people in this country sucking up all the wealth, ask how he thinks the death penalty is O.K. if God says don't kill, etc and they'd throw in some absurdity.

The topic then shifted to gay marriage. They all oppose it and I asked about civil unions. The DINO was undecided about it, but the others said it would "just be foot in the door" (paving the way for a gay takeover of America, I guess). I said I think God created gay people, noted that no one would choose to be marginalized and mocked by right-wing freaks like them, etc, and that it was interesting how they pick and choose passages from the Bible to make their decisions. We don't sacrifice goats and smear their blood on altars anymore, etc. Their reply "Do you think God made Adam for Eve or Adam for Steve?" (the stupidest fucking statement that I am so sick of hearing) and I said he apparently created some Adams for Eves and some Adams for Steves, to which they smirked.

These people are CRAZY and I don't think all Repukes are like them. I hope that smart Republicans who are truly fiscally responsible and like smaller government will recognize that Kerry is actually better for them.

It's amazing that people vote against their own self-interests in so many ways because of abortion and gay rights. I think abortion is horrendous, but I will not vote against anyone because of it. I am not a single-issue voter and Kerry and most Democrats are superior on 95% of the issues.

I hate having to work with members of The American Taliban.

2. Being anti-abortion is fine
but I note it's apparently okay to bomb babies, and pregnant women.

As long as they're not white of course.

What did Falwell say? 'Blow them all away in the name of the Lord'

Doesn't sound like being 'pro-life' to me.

3. There is no point in arguing with these people
They can't tell the difference between the golden arches and the pearly gates.

4. First, I think you make a mistake arguing at work
but since you already have, here is your argument:

Where in the Bible does it prohibit abortion or gay marriage?

Demand chapter and verse. That will at least give all of you a cooling off period.

Don't insult their intelligence, even if it's real! That never won an argument.

5. That is the funniest thing I have ever read!
"I don't think all Repukes are like them. I hope that smart Republicans who are truly fiscally responsible and like smaller government will recognize that Kerry is actually better for them."

Who writes your comedy material?

6. More abortions have been performed since bush* took office
abortions were down during Clinton because of economics, health care issues, and all the things that Democrats do to lower the abortion rate. Clinton said abortions should be legal and few...that is my take on it. To make it illegal is not to stop abortions..a poor woman who cannot possibly care for a child if she becomes pregnant will get an abortion...if it is legal it is safe, if it is illegal it is not safe. Rich women who simply do not want another child will be able to travel to whereever abortions are legal.

Democrats want abortions to be legal and few...republicans do not care but want to use it as a wedge issue..why is it still legal while bush* and the republicans have all the cordons of power???

ABORTION IS JUST A WEDGE ISSUE FOR REPUBLICANS TO USE..THEY DO NOT WANT IT TO BECOME ILLEGAL BECAUSE IT WILL REMOVE A WEDGE ISSUE!!!

11. In the same vein you could point out that...
In places like the Netherlands, where abortion is easily available, they have very low abortion rates due to extensive use of modern cotraceptives and government support of family planning organizations.

9. Buy the book "What's the matter with Kansas"
It will help you understand why these people are insane. It will also explain why the crazy ones cannibalized their own party and decimated the moderate Republicans, as well as undertook a decades long campaign to vilify liberals. There are no "smart" republicans anymore, only the fanatical.

10. By god, they had control of 2 branches of govt.
for the last two years. Why didn't they do something about ending abortion if they are really *uh-hem* "pro-life"? Because they don't want to, because they want to use women's misery for political purposes.

That'll change soon enough, though.

12. A friend of mine is a born again Christian....
I said the same thing to him. "You can't be pro-life and support the death penalty." He hasn't mentioned abortion since.

As a result of my remark he also had a falling out with one of his body building buddies who was in favour of the death penalty for theft. True story. You're either with Jesus or you're agin' em.

14. please do me a favor and show them this article
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/26/politics/campaign/26gay.html?oref=login&oref=login

that shows Bush's support for civil unions. Explain to them that Bush and Kerry's positions are nearly indistinguishable. You won't be able to get them to vote for Kerry, but they might hesitate to vote for Bush.

16. The GOP are laughing their asses off about people like this
They realized they can give this large chunk of the population their single-issue stance, and these people will then literally let them GET AWAY WITH MURDER as long as they voice support for their stupid-ass midievel belief system.

You think the rich republicans REALLY believe this bullshit? Do you think men who say "fuck yourself" on the floor of the senate and give the finger to television cameras are REALLY men of God? Do you think they REALLY wouldn't get an abortion for any woman in their family who fucking wanted one?

Hell no. But by pandering to this part of the electorate they've probably locked up an automatic 35% of the vote and can do ANYTHING, literally ANYTHING as long as they're anti-choice and anti-gay.

It's diabolical, and it works.
