Peak Oil Researchers: Some help needed

I'm studying oil imports and consumption in my country (India). The govt here gives out stats in million tonnes, and I'm pretty dumb when it comes to mathematical conversions.

So could anyone tell me how to convert one million tonnes into gallons and barrels?

As I understand, a barrel would contain 42 gallons (US). Is that right?

Your help would be really appreciated.

1. For some reason I was thinking it was 55 gal...not sure.

I'm sure you can find it on net somewhere. Have you been to website From the Wilderness? Not for the conversion rate but for info on peak oil? They specifically mention India as one of the countries who are buying oil sometimes at a premium in order to deal with the coming oil shortage.

I'll go have a look. I've been reading Ruppert's Crossing the Rubicon. He's really got a lot of info in that book, although the editing isn't that great.
I think 55 gallons per barrel is the UK thing. Or so google told me.

It gives 7.33 barrels per tonne which if I remember from school is slightly different from a ton. (possibly) :silly:

hey legin, i think tonne and ton are the same... its the brit/yankee thing. like how the brits would spell "HONOUR" and americans would go with "HONOR"

8. Tonnes are usually "Metric Tons" or 1,000Kg.

The British ton is the long ton, which is 2240 pounds, and the U.S. ton is the short ton which is 2000 pounds.

Both tons are actually defined in the same way. 1 ton is equal to 20 hundredweight. It is just the definition of the hundredweight that differs between countries. In the U.S. there are 100 pounds in the hundredweight, and in Britain there are 112 pounds in the hundredweight. This causes the actual weight of the ton to differ between countries.

To distinguish between the two tons, the smaller U.S. ton is called short, while the larger British ton is called long.

There is also an third type of ton called the metric ton, equal to 1000 kilograms, or approximately 2204 pounds. The metric ton is officially called tonne. The SI standard uses tonne, but the U.S. Government recommends using metric ton.
