City readies 'election fallout' plan

As the race for the White House comes down to the wire, Tallahassee Mayor John Marks said he realizes the city may play center stage for the second consecutive presidential election.
The only difference is, this time, the city will be ready.
"I am not nervous, but I want to be cautious and prepared in the event that this election is close and there are challenges," he said. "We were caught totally unprepared for that in 2000. Florida is a key battleground state, and the race for this state is going to be close. We may likely become the center of the universe again."
The city has crafted an "election fallout" plan - a collection of security measures, traffic plans and a set of media controls - that many hope will eliminate some of the chaotic situations that happened in 2000, when hundreds of media from around the world descended on Florida's capital. The city is also planning a public-relations rush to take advantage of the potential media blitz.
Police Chief Walt McNeil said he expects more than 300 different media entities to call the city home over the next week. Those who came to town last election, however, will see a distinct difference because of a plan more than a year in the making.
