What would you do? Homeland Insecurity
A coworker of mine has been chatting with someone for about a week. It started off friendly, then quickly went to over-friendly and now is just plain bizarre.

In a nutshell - the guy is from Nigeria, supposedly. He did give her a Nigerian telephone number which she checked - it is a legitimate number, although of course she hasn't called it. She has talked to him by cell phone, and her phone showed a New York city location. He has recently asked her to pick up medical supplies for his sister, who is a "nurse" in Nigeria. He gave her an address close by her hometown.

She has called the state police, the FBI (who referred her to an online reporting site - ISDC) and just now, with me on the line, the Department of Homeland Security. The police and FBI told her that they couldn't do anything since a crime had not been committed.

The response from the woman she spoke to was lukewarm in the extreme. She basically said, 'oh. Well, you've done all you could do. Nothing more we can do. You reported it, it's up to them to deal with it.' She didn't ask for any details, including all the saved IMs and emails that my friend has, or the telephone numbers or the physical address that she's been given. She sounded bored with the whole thing.

This illustrates, to me, the utter lack of safety in our country under this Administration. It's proof that none of the agencies that are charged with our protection give a damn about our safety.

What would you do? I don't know what to tell her.
