Why I dislike Maureen Dowd even when she cuddles up to our side.
Maureen Dowd's Joycean ravings each week in the high and mighty NYT op-ed page are notable for one characteristic:her total self absorption. When dealing with any issue, her predilection for injecting her grating persona into the op-ed stands out.Because of her self absorption, the issue itself becomes irrelevant because it is only a vehicle to put on display her preening self.

The second point I want to make ( and, this may well arise from her first) is the lack of any sense of proportion in her writings.Whether she is writing about her shopping expeditions in the trendy Fifth Avenue boutiques or she is talking about important matters, the tone is the same. The issue's importance is immaterial;it is what Maureen did that counts.

Along with these observations, note that Maureen has to use expressions that are designed to elevate her position compared to her readers, by showing she is part of the New York glitterati. The end result is that Maureen comes across as the vain and self absorbed woman that she is.I much prefer these types of people to be on the other side.

4. her writing style is too self-conscious, I agree. It gets in the way.
I had a very active dislike of her until I saw her on Charlie Rose. She is absolutely different from her writing style. Her writing is still too glib, and still writes in that Block-That-Metaphor! way, but it was helpful to me to hear how she talks and thinks. I can stomach her better now. It's David Brooks I hate with the intensity of a thousand suns now. :)

10. That matters, how?
You don't toss a buck to the news vendor just to look at her byline photo, do you? Her columns are little more than high-school snark.

11. You know
I noticed during a radio interview that Maureen is a world class name dropper. It was if she couldn't get through a sentence without telling us that "so and so told me" or "as what's his famous name once said to me" etc,etc,etc.....therefore I take much of what she says with the proverbial grain of salt.

other shills too.George Will, of course, is on a personal name basis with history's important people.Tom Friedman has never met a taxicab driver in Bombay or Beijing who is not well versed in international events or economics much in the way Chauncey Gardner used to spout nonsense that was lapped up by the Tom Firedmans in that movie.

12. I couldn't agree with you more
Dowd couldn't wait for the next GOP lie about Gore to be faxed to her so she could write a snarky column about it. Never mind that it wasn't true. Never mind that it came from a party that couldn't tell the truth to save itself. If she could write a column that savaged Gore (or Hillary, or Clinton), she would go right ahead.

Never a retraction. Never an apology for writing articles that were based on nothing but proven lies.

And those essays have had disastrous, real-world effects - mostly the burning, explosive deaths of tens of thousands of poor innocent people, in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in our fighting forces.

Way to go, Maureen.

She can go Cheney herself. You know she'll go right back to it as soon as Kerry is inaugerated.

repeated the bogus Who among us doesn't love Nascar thing. Ok, I'm back to being grumpy about her.

25. Of course
column after bogus column about how Gore lies about everything. The internet, Love Canal, Love Story, his farm chores. She whored every GOP falsehood about Gore they put out.

She also ran with the bogus "Hillary's gift registry" story. Also about theft from AF1. Also about the "trashing" of the white house.

She is a one-woman propaganda machine for the GOP when it suits her purpose.

She can go rot.

stomach turning. Saw her last night on ABC's Primetime - the one pitting Eminem's Mosh to Rove's terraists and spouting: "they are all bad - poor us, assaulted by these things"

Thanks for crystallizing what I find distasteful about Dowd. If given a choice between being popular and being bright, she'd pick popular every time. Give me Molly Ivins any day.
