Are there any reliable sightings and interviews with him prior to 9/11 and for that matter even during the Mujahideen war against the Soviet Union?

If it is a serious question, then, no, Bin Laden is not a fictional character. He was well known as a threat to the United States dating from at least the Clinton administration. Clinton gave orders to capture him. So, unless the theory goes that Clinton made up Bin Laden so that * could later use him as part of a power grab, then Bin Laden is real.
