I know a few people who are Muslim, and had a discussion with one woman in particular. She's celebrating Ramadan (sp?) right now, and we talked a bit about that. She had her TV on, and I asked what it was because there was a lot of singing, and the subscript looked Arabic, and she said it was prayers. I asked, "Am I keeping you from praying now?" She responded, "No, it's not time here yet." She told me she has satellite reception from many other countries, and that she gets news from all over the Middle East, including Al-Jazeera.
We started talking about how we in the U.S. see one side of the Iraq war, but she must see a lot of things we don't on Al-Jazeera (not that I think they're totally unbiased, either).
Anyway, long story short, she asked who I was voting for, and I told her Kerry. She agreed (she can't vote yet, but her husband can), and said that Bush has made a huge error in attacking Iraq. Her culture, she said, is different than ours, and when Bush starts talking about how he's bringing democracy to the Muslim world, she said he's equating our culture with the culture in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and other countries with a deep Muslim base. Guess what?
THEY DON'T WANT TO BE US!
Yeah, I know we're all shocked.
I'm being long-winded, but if I were a mother in Iraq and I lost my husband or my children or members of my family or close friends, you can imagine just how I'd feel about the message. In fact, I'm a mother here in the U.S., and if someone harms my children, my husband, my friends, or my family, all good-will and rationality goes out the window.
