Son worries about parents' votes

They don't know who he is, but law lets nursing home residents cast ballot

By Lisa A. Abraham

Beacon Journal staff writer

When Robert Floyd went to visit his parents at the Hartville nursing home where they reside, he was struck by the fact that both were wearing ``I voted today'' stickers.

His mother suffers from Alzheimer's. His father, ailing with lung cancer, is under hospice care.

Both 81, their minds unfortunately fail them.

``If you can't remember who your own son is, how can you vote on issues and the presidency?'' Floyd wondered.

After some checking, he learned that the nursing home had arranged for its residents to vote absentee.

---snip

Floyd said his parents were lifelong Democrats who moved to a nursing home in September from Akron's Ellet neighborhood. He wonders if they were able to vote for candidates he knew they would have supported and how they were even able to make the determination.

Neither of his parents were able to recall if they voted, or who they voted for, and he believes a family member should have been present to aid them with voting.

1. WOULD HAVE TO TOTALLY CHALLENGE COMPETENCE TO VOTE
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 11:30 AM by bettyellen
YOU'D HAVE NO GROUNDS SAYING, THEY'RE CRAZY IF SHE VOTED REPUG. IT'S AN ISSUE OF EITHER LEGALLY COMPETANT OR NOT , AND WAS TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF -- AND ARE THERE MORE OF THE SAME IN HER HOME-?? GOOD QUESTION!
IT'S A DOCTORS CALL TO MAKE. BUT IF HE WANTED TO PUSH IT, HE COULD GET THEM INVALIDATED IF A DCOTOR AND LAWYER WOULD HELP, THEY GO SEE WHO ELSE VOTED THER. IT WOULD BE A GREAT THING TO FIND OUT WHO DID IT. I'M GUESSING IT WAS A REPUG. THIS IS SHORING UP THE BASE. GRABBING ANY SCRAPS THEY CAN!

THIS HAPPENED TO MY DEAR FRIEND, WHEN SHE WAS SICK HER NEPHEW WAS COLLECTING ABSENTEE BALLOTS FOR A GUY SHE WASN'T GOING TO VOTE FOR. SHE COULDN'T TALK OR WRITE. IT WAS BETWEEN FAMILY, I COULDN'T DO A THING ABOUT IT.

3. That story is disgusting
a relative disabusing a familial relationship for a single vote and dishonoring her wishes. Makes me ill.

I wondered the same thing.... how many people of similar condition voted from that home? And who was filling out the ballots for them?

4. traditional absentee thing...getting out the "base"
means them harassing their relatives for absentee ballots. they've always done this here.
it all happened first, in hoboken.
