My personal experience with Bush
He visted my town, a small farming community in Wisconsin that has never had a president visit. A local Republican said he would stop at a second-hand store whose proceeds go to a local hospice- A good thing in the community. About 1000 excited onlookers gathered on main street, hoping to meet the president, thinking he might stop at this wonderful part of our community and show off his "compassionate conservative" side. And when the Bush motorcade appeared down the road, it turned away from main street into the Kansas City Chiefs training camp, where Bush threw a football around with some rich fuck for 20 minutes. He then blasted through downtown past the excited crowd, leaving everyone, dejected, to choke exhaust from the 15+ greyhounds and the two HUGE Bush/Cheney busses... I just stood with my Kerry/Edwards shirt shaking my head.

3. Sounds just like Bush, doesn't it?
He just moves on, leaving a trail of dust and exhaust for others to deal with.

Very symbolic and real.

5. A touching story, stpalm.
Be sure to send it to the media so they can spin it into some sort of gold for Shrub. "Sensitive Shrub" careful not to disturb busy farmers...he's such a plain spoken guy that words were not even needed for the crowd to feel his love.

Something like that...

6. Do you mean to tell me that our God-ordained Holy President
was conveyed through your small community in a lowly bus?

8. Shaking my head
and thinking at least it seems to have cost the Chiefs. Hopefully it will cost Bush* as well. Sorry. How much did that little trip cost your community in security? I would sent the bill to Carl Peterson.

9. The a-hole did the same thing where I live in Central Florida
right after the recent hurricanes. He made a well publicized stop in Lake Wales, ostensibly to show his "compassionate" side. A lot of sheepies were waiting to see and hear their Messiah. His entourage paraded down the highway and went straight for a big citrus grove where he shot the shit with the wealthy grove owners and then he hauled ass. The sheepies were disappointed but I thought it was typical and funny too.

19. That photo reminds me of when Karen Hughes, and others
started gibbering that Bush had started looking really "Presidential" during the 2000 Campaign. Who would believe it?

Guy just doesn't have what it takes.

17. I'm sure the guy he tossed the football with will vote for him & maybe $$
donate.

But, among the townspeople, my guess is he lost whatever votes he might have gotten, had he done the smart thing.

But, yes, this is what he's done to the entire country: go for the photo op w/ the millionaires (football players), and let the citizens eat his dust.

20. actually,
the players were done practicing but they made them go back out onto the field so it would look better when Bush came. Bush threw a football around with some rich owner, which IMO is worse.

18. Even his Daddy was better at it than this, though not much
Bush Sr. visited Faith, NC in 1992. Faith is a small town known for two things locally: the big Fourth of July celebration and its history of racism.

Faith had faithfully sent invites to presidents of whatever party over the years, asking them to attend the big Fourth celebration that it took such pride in. Poppy finally took the bait in 1992, when NC was a swing state and he was battling for his political life. He helicoptered in, ate some barbecue and took a turn at bat in the softball game. I think he hit a single and then got a pinch runner to come in at first base. He stayed maybe 20-30 minutes for his photo op, but at least the general public was allowed in to see him pose and there were no gatechecks for party registration or loyalty oaths. All you had to do was go through standard screening procedures to get into the fenced-off area, and anyone at the event was welcome to attend without a ticket.

The real problem was that Faith is known locally for having lynched a black man accused of raping a white girl in the 20's or 30's. The citizens then place a sign outside of town reading "N______, don't let your face be shown after sundown." Everyone locally knows the history of the town and there are still black people who will not go there. Faith's excitement about finally getting a presidential visit for its famous Fourth shindig soon became shame over its reputation for being a haven for racists when the national news outlets learned the history of the town.

21. In the end
Bush made his way to Hudson where he had an "ask the president" session which basically was a "tell the president how great he is session". Which isnt surprising since they screened all the people before giving out tickets.
