To be labeled a liberal is a kiss of political death. We seem to have forgotten that it was the liberals who were usually on the right side in the struggle for social justice. They were the ones who called for a stop to child labor, brought about the six-day work week with eight-hour workdays. They were the ones who fought for the minimum wage. It was the liberals who fought for women to have the right to vote. They were the ones who challenged destructive, monopolistic corporations. Liberals gave us Social Security and Medicare. And they were the ones who called for the environmental regulations that have initiated the long process to restore the natural environment.
We seem to have forgotten that Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela were all liberals who were condemned by the conservative establishment. Let us remember that it was a collection of liberals, led by the likes of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson that gave birth to America. They were the ones who championed the idea of human equality. When I consider the ways in which contemporary conservatives honor our nation's founders, I understand those who contend that conservatives are people who worship at the graves of dead radicals.
