Poll question: George W. Bush vs. Richard M. Nixon |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 04:51 PM by Pepperbelly
I disliked Nixon as much as anyone. No shit, if I could've turned cartwheels when he weaseled off the scene, I would have. Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, no Nixon-lover he, recently admitted that if an election were between Nixon and Bush, he would not hesitate to pull the lever for Tricky Dick.
I wouldn't either. How do YOU feel about this? Please note, suicide is NOT an option.

1. poll is unfair in one sense.... |
|
Nixon seems more benign now because we survived him. At the time, he seemed like the Devil himself. Those who vote should remember their feelings THEN, not their feelings now. Ditto Reagan.

14. I remember my feelings about Nixon vividly, living outside of DC, very |
|
close to Andrews AFB. Half my classmates were military brats. They were in constant fear for their fathers. Even the ones who made it home safe, didn't always stay safe. 2 fathers of kids I knew committed suicide soon after returning from Viet Nam. I remember the divisiveness. I remember "love it or leave it". I was tear gassed when I was 13, protesting that war. I was a serious bookworm and read every scrap of the WP, back when it was an honest newspaper. I remember being ridiculed in class by a teacher for my anti-war views. I remember the hell my parents took for theirs. I remember every fucking hellish minute of Tricky Dicks reign, and still I say
Bush is WORSE.

War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war. --RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
Richard Nixon looks like a flaming liberal today, compared to a golem like George Bush. Indeed. Where is Richard Nixon now that we finally need him?
If Nixon were running for president today, he would be seen as a "liberal" candidate, and he would probably win. He was a crook and a bungler, but what the hell? Nixon was a barrel of laughs compared to this gang of thugs from the Halliburton petroleum organization who are running the White House today -- and who will be running it this time next year, if we (the once-proud, once-loved and widely respected "American people") don't rise up like wounded warriors and whack those lying petroleum pimps out of the White House on November 2nd.
Nixon hated running for president during football season, but he did it anyway. Nixon was a professional politician, and I despised everything he stood for -- but if he were running for president this year against the evil Bush-Cheney gang, I would happily vote for him.
You bet. Richard Nixon would be my Man. He was a crook and a creep and a gin-sot, but on some nights, when he would get hammered and wander around in the streets, he was fun to hang out with. He would wear a silk sweat suit and pull a stocking down over his face so nobody could recognize him. Then we would get in a cab and cruise down to the Watergate Hotel, just for laughs.

9. Nixon trying to rewrite his own history. |
|
He surrendered a war he believed in, to win an election. He accepted terms that were available to him 2 years earlier because his poll numbers were slipping badly.
While he did the right thing to pull out of the war, and what he said in 1983 was correct. It was correct years before that but he was a true believer in the war until it was going to cost him votes. War casualties didn't bother him, losing votes did.
I still can't decide in this poll between the only presidents I have ever hated.

I don't agree with his views of the world, but at least he spoke well, and without that faux southern drawl that chimpy likes to sport. :eyes:

17. My first presidential vote |
|
was for Nixon in '60. Heavily influenced by my division chief in the Navy. Knew better by the time Nixon ran in '68 but sat out the vote that year because of the loss of Bobby. But after saying all that, IF Nixon were alive and running, and had the same gang of thieves around him, I would cheerfully vote for him over Bush and his bunch.

19. My impression of Nixon |
|
and how I reconcile that Kerry could at some point shake his hand, is that Nixon out of office was a different man than Nixon in office.
He was a very knowledgeable person on foreign affairs, very insightful. I was impressed with the quote that Hunter gave us in his endorsement especially. The way to end war is to take the profit out of waging war -- wow.
Nixon was a much better man when he was not president. This man was NOT built for public office. He was much better as an advisor.

21. Nixon would be considered a left wing commie today |
|
for a lot of his positions. He actually suggested that maybe we should establish a minimum annual wage for working families. In other areas he was very far to the right so he would not be my ideal candidate. But fuck, compared to *? No contest.

hated him when he was POTUS, I cheered when he resigned... I would vote for him in a minute in a choice between him and the Texas Twit.
On a humourous note... I'll bet he's spinning in his grave to hear that he "would be considered a left wing commie today".
