The right-wing argument that pushes me over the EDGE.
When I hear it I feel like throwing things against the wall. It is so asinine - so wrong - so delusional.

Right-wingers will sometimes argue that it was their side that fought for civil rights back in the sixties. However, it was our fuckin' party that kicked the Dixiecrats out - it was 'liberals' who took to the streets to fight, not wingers.

There was a reason Strom Thurmond began his career as a Democrat and ended it as a repig.

I've heard this on right-wing radio and on FR. It's a pretty common right-wing meme. I've actually heard them say "liberals opposed civil rights."

AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Mythmaking. Ignore it.
Read "What's the Matter with Kansas" by Thos. Frank. It'll explain a lot.

2. Kindly remind them
that Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964-which made it an issue in that campaign. Don't recall any of the early Civil Rights workers being anything but liberal. After all, it was a Unitarian minister who was shot during the march across the bridge in AL. I know there were fundamentalists back then too (some of my relatives, sadly, were that), and they weren't interested in civil rights-though they were interested in bashing Catholics as "idol-worshippers".

5. So did Bush Sr. until he saw the handwriting on the wall.
Then he started campaigning on it as if he was the damn author of the Civil Rights movement!

4. What the GOP did was argue that slavery should be prevented from growing,
but the actual abolition of slavery was a matter of state's rights.

It was genuinely a pro-business approach, and wasn't about freeing slaves at all, just about limiting it to where it was. Freeing slaves would've been bad for business.
