14. I really doubt there are any southern baptist DUers, but, its usually
a pretty stupid and rude idea to stereotype and label a whole class of people. But if it makes you feel more secure in yourself, and feel better about yourself to unnecessarily insult people who are different from us-go ahead. Thats what discussion boards are all about. Its up to each individual to select the worthwhile from the trash.

27. Southern Baptist DU'er here
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 09:33 PM by scmirage
No, I do not agree with my church on any of a number of their official positions. But it should be noted that there are different divisions of the Baptist Church--there's the Southern Baptists, then there are Free Will Baptists and Independent Baptists. Free Willers tend to be the really hard-core "speaking in tongues" variety. And then there are the really hard-core holy rollers-the Church of God, Holliness, and Pentacostal varieties (think speaking in tongues, snake handling, and women with really big beehive hairdos). They aren't connected in any way to the Baptist faith, although they are "born-agains."

Some SB churches can be very liberal, the one I attend allows women to be deacons, for example which is considered to be absolutely scandalous by some other churches in our area. Let's put it this way--if they weren't liberal minded, there's no way I could attend church there. But in other congregations, they can be very hard-core.

My pastor doesn't do the hellfire and brimstone thing. Again, I couldn't attend if he did. But I had the shit scared out of me as a little kid when we did briefly attend a hellfire & brimstone variety church. My parents made the wise decision to transfer their membership pretty quickly. They're both Democrats too by the way.

In my experience, the leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention make these grand pronouncements every year about what we're supposed to believe and not believe, etc., etc., but I've never, not once in my 40 years seen any of it ever be so much as mentioned in my local church. (Well, except for the brief time we attended the wacky church I talked about earlier).

I'll say this--I don't think that priests who molest children represent Catholics as a whole, and I'd hope that the Jerry Falwell's of this world do not represent Southern Baptists! Yes-there are some scary fundie Bible thumpers out there but there are progressives too.

19. These cultists really believe this crap
I was raised Episcoplian but have become rather agnostic. When I moved south, however, someone I came to know and think of as reasonable was shocked when I expressed my beliefs (e.g. I no longer believe in heaven and hell). She actually told me in complete seriousness that she was worried I would go to hell if I didn't change and adopt the Baptist belief system. We no longer speak; she thinks I'm doomed while I think she's loony.

She's a Bushbot to boot and believes the Iraq war was/is a good thing... :puke:

Trust me, those people are f**king scary! I was told things like, "The King James version is the ONLY Bible I can believe." When I moved out of my parents house I finally had to tell my mom and my aunt that they needed therapy. Imagine the relief I felt when I was out on my own and found out how normal people live. :-)

11. They are so screwed up.
They have what might be the highest divorce rate in the country after independent churches. They even talked about it at the meeting of the SB Convention a few years ago. Some of that is because they tend to be from southern states where people usually marry younger and when they don't know what they are doing.

But I think part of it is because they live these phony repressed lives. That causes them to over-reach for sexual gratification. There are so many of them that get into trouble for hiring prostitutes, keeping secret closets full of porn, and molesting women and kids. Women are not really treated "as equals" but as his help-mate. I wonder how that affects the problem.

Geez. And that doesn't even inclide how screwed up their theology gets.

12. TURN IT OFF!!!!!!
Or their evil will taint you.

I know some sweet, good Dem Baptists, but I absolutely loathe the platforms of the Southern Baptists. They RULE Georgia, and I couldn't leave that state fast enough.

I found it hilarious when they came out and "apologized" for all the years their denomination claimed racism was supported by the bible. Lots of Southern Baptists were KKK members, you can be sure ( I knew some - shudder). Shortly after asking forgiveness for hating folks with the same skin color as Jesus, they issued their proclamation that "All women must submit to their husbands."

These pasty white cowards simply CANNOT feel the love of God unless they can find someone to make lower than themselves.

"He who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Don't worry. Their own bible condemns them to hell.

That would be the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lousville, KY (M.Div. 1979). And just like family, it's OK if **I** make fun of them. It's not OK if you do it.

And I thought your comment was about as funny as suggesting that the rabbis need to cut off more than just "the tips." Which is to say, not funny at all.

When innocent people are the butt of the joke, it just isn't funny any more to decent people. It is juvenile bullying and taunting and it debases the discussion.

"Deal with it" and "we are only having fun" is something that was very rarely heard before the radio hate talkers went on the air. Regardless of which group is the target, it is wrong.

I know very well that not all Christians and their various sects are hateful bigots. However, it certainly does seem to me, at least in my experience, that many if not most bigots I've ever come into contact with.... claim to be Christians.

I know they're not, really. Their own actions tell me that. But it tends to make people think, if they experience this often enough, that it is a likely norm for persons of the Christian faith to behave that way.

I think that's what we're seeing here. There are so many viscious, and downright threatening, attacks, coming from certain groups within Christianity that it's ending up tainting the whole bunch in the minds of some.

Nut jobs are attracted to and hide behind Christianity. Yet we wouldn't say "all nut jobs are Christians!!!" even though that statement would be more accurate than it is to say that "all Christians are nut jobs."

Nut jobs also are attracted to and hide behind Americanism. That doesn't make it true that all Americans are nutjobs.

It is mental laziness to label people and attack them as a group, and it also has chilling and dangerous social and political implications.

Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 10:17 PM by m berst
...could this thread have? Southern? Baptist? And then tons of blanket condemnations of Christians?

It is rude and obnoxious, but you know that. It attracts you know who to egg it on a little, but you can see that easily too, I hope. It is stupid tactically for the party, but I am sure you can see that if you think for a second. It emulates the right wingers and reinforces and validates their tactics and strategy, but that is pretty easy to see, too. I am assuming that you said the Hell with all that and indulged yourself in blowing off some steam and if someone gets offended, well tough for them.

But beyond that, and more importantly, it is incorrect. The politicized Dominionists are the threat, not Southerners, not Christians, and not Baptists.

If we are going to talk about this, than let's talk about it, intelligently and knowledgeably.

This complaint of mine isn't about being "tender" it is about people being civilized.

39. Rude and obnoxious?
What's rude and obnoxious (not to mention idiotic) is when Christian nutjobs tell non-believers like me that we're damned to Hell because we don't have a personal "relationship" with some Jewish guy who has been dead for over 2000 years.

And when they say that we're immoral because we don't believe in their mythical sky daddy.

And when they, year after year, try to force mandatory prayer, bible reading, and creation "science" bullshit into the public schools.

And when they restrict stem-cell research.

And when they try to tack their homophobia onto our beloved Constitution.

So you'll have to excuse us if we like to hit back and let off some steam once in a while.

46. No we DON'T have to excuse you.
You should know better than to make blanket condemnations of entire groups of people, MANY OF WHOM ARE ON **OUR** SIDE, and then try to pass it off as "letting off steam." That's a Puke strategy. Say something horrible, and then say "I was just letting off steam." Really? Kinda like the prison guards at Abu Ghraib were just "letting off steam?" Like a "fraternity prank?"

Your stated position in this thread is no more defensible than the fundie types you condemn. And you know it. And you owe a sizeable number of us an apology, but I doubt you're big enough to do so.

By the way, while we're at it, how many hospitals and schools have been endowed by atheists, "pagans", Wiccans, etc.??? How many hungry people have been fed, clothed, and had their lives literally saved? Just wondering.

49. That is very rude, and it shows your lack of understanding of others.
I was raised in that environment, and sometimes it takes a long time to catch on to what has happened to churches in the South. That kind of condemnation is not good.

Should "they" then be subject to vicious attacks? All of them? So that we can blow off steam and hit back?

What a crock.

45. That is not the best choice of words. A little tasteless, IMHO.
I was raised in that church, though I don't belong now. I know a lot of people who are members who just did not realize what was happening....they did not know their church was being hijacked from under them.

They are beginning to realize it now, and two churches in our city are splitting along conservative/moderate lines.

I detest what that church has become, but the words you use are insulting to some very good, kind people who just are unaware.

You just insulted Christians overall. It is posts like this that get quoted all over, while some other good posts are dropping like bricks.
