Then murder 100,000 Iraqis and multiply that number by a unit terra-ist conversion factor. Discount by an arbitrary 25 percent uncertainty of al-Qaeda membership coefficient (why not?). Voila! Three out of four al-Qaeda members killed!

--it doesn't count those unknown, who may or may not be still active.

-- it doesn't count REPLACEMENTS. Saying 75% of the leadership is gone is like trying to say the is no longer a Boston Red Sox team because all of the players from 1986 are retired.

17. This is an example of deceit and deception in the use of numbers.

An intellectually honest person doesn't use percentages unless and until the populations being described exceed 100 or more. Using numbers (percentages) whose scale is 100 to describe something of far smaller scale is overtly deceitful, inviting the inference of larger populations. This was not accidental in Smirk's reply! This is a shop-worn technique of deliberate propagandists.


The (purported) 'fact' is that intelligence estimates that maybe 3/4 of the original al Qaeda leadership, numbering about 20-24 people, have been killed. It's a guess on top of a guess.
