José Serra won, bad news for the left. He's a populist who's actually just another corporate whore.

on edit: Marta Suplicy, the Workers Party incumbent, was unfortunately a lousy administrator. The city under her term has experienced one disaster after another.

But thanks for the links and answers, guys.

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva suffered major defeats in an electoral test of his ruling party's influence, but analysts predicted Brazil's first elected leftist leader would not suffer long-term political damage.

The former health minister who lost the presidential race to Silva two years ago coasted to victory Sunday in the runoff mayoral race for Sao Paulo, one of Latin America's largest cities and a traditional stronghold of Silva's Workers Party.

In Sao Paulo, former Health Minister Jose Serra got 55 percent support compared to 45 percent for incumbent Mayor Marta Suplicy of Silva's Workers Party, with 99 percent of the vote counted.

Silva's party, known in Portuguese as the PT, had been hoping to broaden its base across Brazil in dozens of other large cities holding runoff mayoral elections.
