I grew up in an area where liquor
stores could not open and sell until the polls closed. Is it still that way in some areas?

1. Yes, here in Texas no alcohol will be sold until the polls close.

Election Day was celebrated with barrels of rum, beer and hard cider.

Everyone turned out for the party.

Tables were laid with Election Cakes.

The the local militia band provided music.

And there was cannon fire and musketry as well.

We've lost a lot as a nation since then...

You forget to mention that those barrels of rum, beer and hard cider were often used by candidates and their supporters to woo voters into voting for them. Elections could be won or lost depending on who provided the most booze. Not a good way to pick your leaders.

Yes, I agree that we have distanced ourselves from our electoral process (or it has distanced itself from us). That is why I still cherish Vermont's continued tradition of Town Meeting. It's quite similar (without the coercive aspect) to the old party atmosphere.

up today- champaign for a Kerry victory and bourbon (lots of it) for a Bush victory.
