Delurking to say thank you |
|
I will try to keep this short, as I know that many of you are very busy today fighting for our lives, our futures, and the very soul of this country. Whatever happens tomorrow, I must delurk to say a profound thank you to the members of this forum. You not only have saved my sanity, but you have done much to combat the vileness that is the reality at this time.
I am old enough to remember the late 1960’s and 1970’s. It was a time like this, a great societal divide with much pain due to leadership which had gone horribly wrong. But this time it is far far worse. Now there is so much more at stake, the dangers are almost incomprehensible, and the corruption is rampant and far-reaching. Today we face an unparalleled nightmare.
But what I want you all to hear from me is this: Back then we learned that we could change the world by standing up for what is right through political action. So please do not give up. You can, and will, make a difference.
And you must not stop fighting the good fight. If they steal another election, we know what dangers we as a people and country face. The fight must continue. Never give up. But please take some time to recharge first and know that you will win in the end. Right does make might, not the other way round as the sociopaths in power would have you believe.
If Kerry wins he will need all the help we can give him. He is one of the most courageous men of our time, as well as extremely competent and smart. We owe him much. But he will have a most difficult time when he takes office. He will be dismayed and shocked when he uncovers very serious problems across the board. And sadly he will of course be blamed for all of the muck he inherits. He will also be vilified almost immediately. His job will be thankless and very difficult. He and Edwards must know that they have put themselves and their families at great risk in so many ways. They must be in our hearts and prayers every day.
I have said enough for now. As we used to say when I was young: Keep The Faith. You will prevail in the end.

I'm another one of the old, grey warriors from the '60s. I never thought we would have to fight this hard again, but now I know, this is just the beginning.
When my son comes home for Christmas vacation, I'm going to sit him down, and tell him that soon, protection of our democracy will depend on him and he had best be ready. This is a fight that will go on for generations and as long as there are those who are willing to corrupt our ideals for individual profit and power.

I'm delurking too, to thank you all. Tagging onto Cassie's thread cause I don't think I can start one yet, but Cassie voices my sentiments beautifully. And I am old enough to remember the late 1940s and the 50s, the Nuremberg Trials, the Army-McArthy hearings, and the Rosenberg executions. I remember children bombed in church, Medgar Evers shot in his own yard, and Freedom Riders killed for daring to help register black voters. And look how far we have come...
Wow. We thought we had saved the world in the 70s. Guess it requires periodic saving. I think Thomas Jefferson said something about that.
It is a wonderful thing that is going on here at DU, and you guys warm my heart every day. So where can an old fart buy a black hoodie?
