At last, the election I and so many others have been waiting for is here. I will go out and vote for all democrats on the ticket. My hope and prayer is that Kerry/Edwards will overwhelmingly sweep the election and give the lie to the myth of bush popularity.
Up until November 2000 I believed that I was a politically aware and involved citizen of this nation. I kept up with the news. I was aware of political issues. I always voted. On 9-11-01 as I stood in my boss' office watched the twin towers go down I said "this is Osama bin Laden." Everyone in the room looked at me and truth to tell I don't know if any of them knew who he was.
However, since that election night my entire life changed. Oh sure, externally it looked the same. You know: get up, go to work, come home, etc. Internally though everything changed. I honestly could not believe the depths to which the republicans could sink to win an election. I absolutely could not believe the underhanded tactics, hate and loathing spewed by them.
I have watched in these last 4 years as our great nation has turned into a pariah in the eyes of the world, as our wealth is squandered on war and payoffs to the ultra rich and bush's buddies. I watched in horror as our environment has been assaulted. I am deeply pained by the loss of life of Iraqi citizens and our own young men and women in an unnecessary invasion of a third world country. Throughout I have wondered where the real patriots in this country are. Where were the brave republicans who would stand up and speak out against these horrendous deeds? Evidently nowhere in our Congress.
Since that election night I am now much wiser. I have learned so much more than I never knew. I will not stop learning. I am even more involved in supporting democratic, patriotic, true-blue Americans who truly love this country. I have literally given money until it hurts. I have joined organizations like Moveon.org and the ACLU. I have lobbied my congressmen against the war on Iraq, etc. I worked for Dean and then Kerry. I volunteered to work as a precinct clerk in my county (Palm Beach County) to ensure that all voters who come into my precinct get the opportunity to freely cast their vote.
After this election, I will not stop being active. Now more than ever we must continue to fight for justice in this nation. Especially, god forbid, if bush wins we must continue to fight.
On this election eve, I am heartened by the continuously emerging scandals now being reported by the media. I am heartened by the New York district attorney accepting the people's complaint to investigate the events of 9-11. All of the great organizations that have been with us so many years such as the NAACP and ACLU are now joined by new ones such as Moveon.org to continue to fight.
So finally, regardless of the outcome of this election, let us all continue to fight for justice. Let us all work in whatever way we can, big or small, to restore our nation's integrity and standing in the world.
(P.S. A big thanks to DU for doing what you do and the support and hope you have given me over the past few years.)

4. A Kerry/Edwards win tomorrow is a big step, but just the 1st step. |
|
I will continue to fight until the day I die, or we become the country & world we should be.

We have to help our new President and vice-President clean up the dross of the last 4 years and help the country heal. This has been the most contentious and exhausting election season in my life, but we can't relax after Kerry wins. Fortunately we're in shape from the compaign!
