i am so bummed right now.
i just found out my mom is voting for bush. damn! and she lives in arkansas. damn!

she doesn't agree with kerry's views on abortion and same sex marriage. i emailed her and told her that abortions have risen under bush; that kerry and bush both believe in civil unions, not marriage, for homosexuals; that kerry is pro choice, not pro abortion; and that he voted against the late term abortion bill because it made no exception for the health of the mother.

did i mention she's born again? but she lives in a fairly democratic part of the state and does not appear like a typical fundy.

damndamndamn!!!!

3. I hear ya....
I just posted about a fight with my dad I had earlier. If I have learned anything tonight, it is not to let my politics get in between my dad and I!

Good luck..........

4. Is she better off now than 4 years ago? What about 1124 dead troops, is
that of any concern? The nation's deficit that our grandchildren will be paying for years and years? Laura Bush is pro-choice and the Cheneys have a Lesbian daughter, does she know these things? Is there any chance she might not vote for EITHER candidate? I know how difficult this is for you, I have similar issues with a few in the family...it's a tough challenge. But keep loving your mom no matter what, you'll never have another one.

6. Well at least it's not OH or FL or PA, or WI
I think we have a shot at picking up some of the traditional "red"states but realistically what are the chances in AK? Hopefully we will win it and I have all my fingers and toes crossed but I think we may have to look in others for a turn around. Do you live there? Maybe her vote will be cancelled out by some of the others you worked so hard to get. Just remember she will still be your Mom come Wed no matter what the outcome of the election.

7. I'm sorry about your mother
I feel very lucky to have no one in my family who drinks the Kool-Aid. Today my 86 year old dad said to me- "Oh God, I hope Kerry wins tomorrow". My mom is gone, but she was a life long democrat- a red diaper baby. I was lucky to be raised by forward thinking, open minded people who raised me to always look at things from both sides and try to see things from other people's point of view. My husband is a liberal democrat and so is my brother.

Even my in-laws are good democrats. It's about the only thing we agree on, but it will have to do. '

I feel for people who have to deal with those issues in their families- it's bad enough with friends and co workers.

9. i mentioned the innocent people killed in iraq
i mentioned the 1100+ dead americans. the thousands more injured and maimed. the budget surplus wasted. the millions without health care and the hundred of thousands who have lost their jobs.

my son is 21 and i have a nephew the same age. i told her i'm prepared to send my son out of the country before i let him be cannon fodder for bush.

at least my son and both sisters voted for kerry.

12. Several months ago my Rethug neighbor shocked me
He is in his early 60's and has three grown sons. He said he had told them to go to Canada if there is another draft.

He and his wife both voted for Kerry! Whooopee.

10. building the argument
From another forum, in a thread called: if you are voting for Kerry, please explain why.

me: I'm voting for Kerry because I'm pro-life.

otherperson: um, I thought Bush is pro-life and Kerry is pro-choice (he gives a textbook definition of both)

me: Nope.

Abortions went down under Clinton, and up under Bush. They went up 11% in my state since 2001. A few of the top reasons women give for deciding to get an abortion are no health insurance and no job stability - either for themselves directly, or a spouse. An increase in poverty results in an increase in abortions.

I'm also pro-life for people that are already born, so I oppose allowing corporations to freely pollute without accountability, because it kills people. And I oppose the death penalty.

otherperson: Kerry stated that although he is Catholic and respects Pro-Life viewpoints, he believes that the Constitution needs to be upheld in terms of a woman's right to abortion. He further stated that he would support federal funding for abortions to ensure that poor women could obtain them if they chose. Bush countered by saying that he would not allow federal funding to be spent on abortions and that his ban on partial birth abortions and parental notification was helping to promote a "culture of life in America."

me: yep, I know Kerry is pro-choice. And I also support a women's right to chose as well. But the reality is his policies, from sex education, from appointing people to the FDA's advisory committee on reproductive health who don't oppose birth control, to providing health insurance so people aren't dying from having to cut their pills in half, to creating a safe environment that doesn't cause spontaneous abortions because of toxic chemicals, to his foreign policy, to opposing the death penalty - from conception to grave - his policies are pro-life.

Bush gives lip service to being pro-life, but his policies aren't. He supports taking away the right to chose, but that's different than really having a pro-life agenda.

13. Fine. Vote for issues that do not relate to her, but financial issues go
hell in a hand basket.

Yeah right, gays and babies are her priorities while pensions, health care and social security can be handed over to the corporates while the middle class suffers.
