OK Who is going to attack America so us Black Folk can be FREE!!!
If the reasons the Neo-Cons gave for going to war in Iraq hold then someone needs to lobby the UN or NATO or someone to Attack the US to free us.

Black folks in the US can barely vote, there are people out there who are trying to take my civil rights and the civil rights of all African Americans and throw them away. There is PLANNED INTIMIDATION of African Americans. There are PLANNED VOTER MISINFORMATION CAMPAIGNS directed at African Americans.

There are NeoCons out there that are so happy that our Soldiers are dying because we liberated Iraq and gave them the right to vote. Whooptie Fuckin Doodle-ie-dee.

RACISM is my TERRORISM. The RACISM that the REPUBLICANS are using to challenge my vote is TERRORISM to me. I'm FUCKIN PISSED because I feel threatened by the Administration and their political policies of hatred toward me and my kind.

WELL WHO THE FUCK IS GONNA LIBERATE MY ASS!!!!

WHO THE FUCK IS GONNA SEND SOME TROOPS HERE TO FIGHT FOR MY RIGHT TO VOTE!!!!!!!

Bush policies don't just disenfranchise women, they kill us. Its already happening globally.

I don't mean to take away from xultar's outcry. Many people of many colors are doing their best to be there at the polls to try to prevent disenfranchisement.

Not too many people are doing anything to stop the global gag rule which has already killed millions of women in poverty who depend on US funds to health clinics.

THe challenges to OH & FL voters in primarily black neighborhoods

Calls to African Americans in OH & PA about changes in polling places

People callng African AMericans in OH telling them they can vote by phone.

That is why I'm pissed. YES I DO HAVE A RIGHT TO BE PISSED CUZ I AM!

This is just another form of disenfranchisement, brought to you by the same folks who wrote up the Jim Crow laws. It's more "subtle," but that makes it even worse in many ways.

44. A "challenger" can approach ANYONE and demand to see PROOF
that they are registered, and eligible to vote..If you cannot prove it, you will have to use used toilet paper a provisional ballot, which may or may not be counted or deemed legitimate..

If there are 500 provisional ballots and the margin of victory is 10K, there si no reason to even look at them...but if the margin of victory is 50, then every one will be opened and gone over with a fine toothed comb..

Ok so I'm challenged...I show them a photo ID, maybe a card or two and I have my current phone bill in envelope on me. Would they then leave me alone?

To be able to single anyone in line for 'special attention' sounds so Gestapo like to me. So they don't like my looks and I'm harassed?

I would be absolutely crushed, if I was denied the opportunity to vote.

That's what my state recommends. Georgia state law also says that I have a right to vote a REGULAR BALLOT even if I do not have ID, as long as I sign a sworn statement as to my identity.

Here's a link to states' voting rights. Unfortunately, not all states are listed:

To be able to single anyone in line for 'special attention' sounds so Gestapo like to me.

Me too, and there's no need to put up with it. Here's a toll free phone number for people being harassed or 'discouraged' at the polls:

1 866 OUR VOTE

"The Election Protection HOTLINE serves as an immediate legal resource for voters who are having problems casting their ballots. Lawyers, law students, and other trained volunteers will staff the hotline in Washington, D.C. Each volunteer is trained in identification of common problems experienced by voters, the election law of our targeted communities and the resources available to attorneys on Election Day."

I'm damned mad with you. And as a woman who is sick of the BS bullies trying to suppress the rights of others, I stand with you as well. Information is power. Please pass this information on.

I don't think we have to show ID to challengers, but if a challenger tells a pollworker they're challenging us, the pollworker can decide to ask for ID. I'm not showing anything to anyone who can't prove they work for the county board of elections (and I expect challengers to wave around some kind of "official" document from the R party).

28. Thanks, m. It's been a very rough two days.
But, walking down to the library a while ago, during rush hour, there was a group of college kids on the street, waving signs and cheering for Kerry.

I walked up to them, and said to one, please do me a favor. He said, "Sure, what is it?", and I asked him to please remember after the election and to remind everyone he knows, that thousands of people are going to be homeless because of cuts to Section 8, and to please do what they can in calling and writing to get that overturned. He said they certainly would, thanked me for sharing my concerns with them, and they all crowded around.

THEN... I found out ...... they have traveled all the way here (CO) from Utah and Texas!! Oh, my tears flowed.

One gave me his email addy, and I will keep in touch with this wonderful group of kids.

No matter what happens tomorrow, or whenever it is decided, with a group of kids like this, we can't lose.

Here's to Utah and Texas kids!! :toast:

This reversal of who the victims are and who the perpetrators are is paralyzing the party and the progressive movement.

People get more outraged about being called a racist then they do about someone being a victim of racism, for example.

This accusing people of accusing line of reasoning is bogus and malicious IMHO, and I never heard it before hate radio started, and I find it shocking to see it on a liberal board.

"Branding someone" you say in one of those threads. How can a person be "branded" with callousness towards the poor or with racism? So what if they were? Are not your rebuttals proof positive that you are in fact one who is callous towards the poor? How does being "branded" with this harm you in any way?

This is pure Republicanism, blaming the poor for class warfare and people of color for racial problems. It has no place in liberal thinking.

61. All four links go to the same thread
Why not just post one link to the thread along with the four Kanary posts with which you take issue?

Listen. If we ridicule the people in our party with the most passion, the ones who think fighting poverty is more important than de-freeping polls, that get frustrated from time to time because we, just like those on the "other side," allow ourselves to get distracted by non-issues pushed by the corporate media when our focus should be on less glamourous things like affordable housing and the rights of the disabled -- then all is lost.

Kanary is no freeper. Kanary is one of us. And if we Dems can't tolerate dissent or even internal criticism from people who are on our side (isn't that the side of truth, justice and equality?), we are no better than those we seek to oust from power tomorrow.

The subject of racism is the unwanted guest at the table when liberals discuss politics. Racism is what the war is about, the detentions, the war on poverty, homeland security, the war on drugs, and the destruction of voting rights, yet we are supposed to compromise on any of this? I don't understand that and I don't understand why it is so hard to get any discussion going on it.

29. I've been here for a while I've had to get ugly on a few occasions. Now
I think we need to work to educate and to inform everyone what we see and feel.

I admit it was hard during the primaries to get people to understand. Especially those who were young on life experience but had the loudest voices. For some reason they all thought they knew what was best for black folk even though none of them knew that I was. At that point I wanted to make sure that everyone on DU knows I'm a black female and I tell it like it is. The most hateful thing when some DUers were calling Congressman Charles RAngle an Uncle tom for supportin Wesley Clark and not Dean. THAT SENT ME OVER THE EDGE. Shit like that will not happen here again. If you're going to say something negative about a respected Democratic public servant it better be fact based and not racist based.

I think watching what the Repubs are doing to us as black folk now is helping the young liberals here and everywhere understand what the real deal is for us. So I don't think they'll be so ready to speak for us but speak WITH US against the Rethuglican establishment.

That is what I want voices, and hearts to work with me. Not speak for or work against me.

We may be on the brink of greater understanding between Democrats, Progressives, and Liberals and all races. That will truly make us a force to be reckon with!

39. "with" is the key
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 10:43 PM by m berst
I too think we are on the brink of a new dawn of understanding and it is right in reach and we can do it together.

Mistreatment of human beings based on the artificial and meaningless criteria of skin color is arbitrary. When we fail to stand up to people being treated a certain way for arbitrary reasons, we have lost the fight against tyranny. This isn't an "issue" off to the side in some drawer somewhere labeled "Black folks concerns" that we put on our liberal agenda. This is core and central to human rights, to democracy and to the fight against tyranny in all of its forms and guises.

Race is an arbitrary excuse for war, torture and oppression. One arbitrary excuse used will lead to any and all arbitrary excuses being used. As liberals, when we accept the concept of "them" we are accepting racism. Being nice to "them" as opposed to being cruel to "them" are just two side to the same coin, and both sides are needed to keep the system of oppression in place.

The very idea of race has no basis in science or genetics, and is an artificially created concept. There is only one race - the human race - and that isn't some bleeding heart liberal sentimentality, it is hard fact. Minorities are not voting blocks or "them," they are people arbitrarily forced into a group and then excluded from mainstream society solely on the basis of skin pigmentation.

Sorry for being so verbose. I am trying to make my meaning very clear.

edit - added a letter

that's damn right, there shouldn't be that drawer off to the side"black folks issues" or "women's issues" either. What's good for human dignity is good for human dignity. Period!

You're right, arbitrarily singling out some group for discrimination opens the door to the singling out of any other "inconvenient" group.

Disgusting to see what this bunch of fascists is doing. Its the last gasps of a dying old world order that won't give up without an ugly fight. It has to be. Those of us who want change, who want human dignity for everyone are here and influencing others, more and more.

64. yes, and now the time is right, awareness has touched a large enough
number of people that we can show them! It will be very cool to see Dems of all description working together at the polls. As an aside, the religious group I belong to is thoroughly diverse, was even written up in a Buddhist magazine as being an unusual example of Buddhism--the largest worldwide group and the most diverse. Even compared to non-Buddhist religious groups. Its something I am in awe of and proud to be involved in.

I also hope that Dems unite on the issues that are threatening women's lives, I want more progress on that one. Well, now I think, there was the hugest march in history, the March for Women's Lives, though the media completely ignored that. I digressed, sorry.

79. What's that, the Crabs in the bucket routine. We have that problem
in the black community as well.

That is where I need to pledge some additional time as well.

Soon the Democrats will feel the breeze of conservative blacks as they leave. Democrats need to stop taking us as a group forgranted.

I've met many young blacks who voted for Bush in '00. I need to spend more time educating my Bruvas and Sistahs. But the Democrats or liberals have to actually do what they say and say what they mean where Blacks are concerned for this to work.

24. Republicans would be burning crosses and wearing white hoods
and carrying ropes at polling stations if they could get away with it.

We have to vote this racist republican party out of existence. We may not be able to stop their hatred but we can sure as hell drive them and their hate underground and into the darkness where it belongs with the rest of the cockroaches, worms, rats, and snakes.

Some people say that all republicans aren't bad.

But, why would anyone be part of a group that was so blatantly and undeniably racist if they were decent people?

26. what's the alternative?
"But, why would anyone be part of a group that was so blatantly and undeniably racist if they were decent people?"

Because they don't see it. And they don't see it because no one is showing them by word and deed. We can make the right wingers into the bad guys and give ourselves gold starts all night long, but it doesn't change the fact that white liberals abandoned the fight. "We're not as bad as Bush!!!" That's true. We are worse. We are worse when we compromise at all on the issue of racism, because we are the ones who claim to have taken up the burden and because we depend on the votes. A person denied their right to vote is a human being and a fellow citizen, not an abstraction or a statistic, and it is happening right now not off in some textbook or in some theoretical sense.

40. Please don't include me in your "we", I don't fit into your "white
liberal" description.

Not every Democrat is white. Not every "liberal" is white. And if you are insinuating that my experience with bigotry and racism is theoretical or from a textbook you are way, way off base.

It seems, by your own account, that you are a "white liberal", you are worse than Bu$h, that you stopped fighting for people's rights, that you compromise on issues of racism, and have come to the realization that non-white folks are human beings and fellow citizens that are not abstractions or statistics, and that these non-white folks are right now being denied their right to vote.

If this is a problem for you, it would seem logical to look for a solution. Maybe if you find a solution, you could inform other white liberals who share your concerns, maybe even post your idea here at DU.

There is very good reason that women, and ethnic, and other types of minorities vote overwhelmingly against republicans and for Democrats.

The reason is that Democrats, in their limited way, actually do attempt to make every Americans life better.

Hispanics are overwhelmingly against Bu$h, basically every Indian Tribe in the country has come out endorsing Kerry, and black folks traditionally vote overwhelmingly democrat.

Not to mention gays. And women, of course.

Here it is: You want equality, you want fairness, you want rights, you want justice?

Then simply get rid of the republicans. They have been keeping this country from evolving, and have staunchly hindered the Democratic Party from pursuing sensible policies of fairness and equality since the 1950's.

Republicans cannot see that they are racist? What do we have to do, beat them with sticks to get it through to them? They know damn well that they are racists, they just don't say it out loud, although their actions give them away all the time. I recently said this right into both of a republican couples' faces - "You are fucking racists!". This was after they told me that they supported the war in Iraq because it was killing lots of Arabs and that they hated Arabs because of 9/11.

And you know what they said? They said, "We're not racists!"

Democrats are far from perfect. But republicans are totally fucked.

We do the best we can with what we have and hope to make it better from there. Pragmatically speaking, I have to put aside my own "minority issues" right now because there is a pseudo-nazi dictator in the WH and a congress full of fascists hell bent on eliminating every gain in civil rights that we have made in the last 150 years. After Bu$h is gone, I will determine my next best course of action in order to achieve long term goals.

That includes the various African American neo-cons.

My opinion is the African American voters are better informed and perceptive than most voters. The neo-cons are everyones enemy including the types who plaster confederate flags on their pick up, they are just not smart enough to figure that out yet.

Desperation, frustration, and persecution are all qualities of government coming to a neighborhood close to you, with equal opportunity.

How about we talk about racism instead of comparing and parading liberal credentials?

How many threads are there about Tweety or Tucker Carlson? Now, you could say "well we would talk about African American TV commentators if there were any." Right. Exactly.

that the RW is trying to take their vote away.

Democrats and Liberals in general need to answer the basic needs of Black folk or they will loose the conservative religious blacks to the dark-side.

If Rethuglicans can promise at LEAST that religious and morality thing. There would be at least one party who provided what they promised. See where I'm heading.

Democrats often promise but rarely deliver socio-economic justice. Why?, Because they are trying to woo the moderate conservative.

That is the puzzle we need to solve.

Education, NCLBH...abolish that shit. Put in something that isn't so test based. Black kids aren't learning they are memorizing. That isn't education.

We need to bring jobs back to the USA. Well don't steer them all to the suburbs. Steer some, (require with tax incentives) to the inner city and urban areas. So people without cars can use mass transit to work.

That's what I'm sayin when I say take America back for all of us and watch out for the interests of all in the process.

And you know, I'm glad you agree, because, everybody isn't noticing this. It's not just the people of color, but any minority. My niece, who is out of the closet lesbian and has a girlfriend she'd like to marry, is serving her second term of duty in Iraq, but has no right to marry her sweetheart when she comes home. 82. Black folks out in force in Brooklyn
My mom and I just came back from voting in our very heavily black neighborhood in Brooklyn NY. Many Caribbean immigrants. Polls open in NY at 6 am, my mom and I were there the minute they opened and there was already a crowd. By the time we left the line was out the door...at 6:30am! Mom votes when the polls open all the time because she's a nurse and works weird shifts, she says in 20+ years of living in this area she has never seen so many people come out this early. Many were first time voters. I didn't do a headcount or anything but believe me when I say that place was PACKED.

Mom forgot to pull the lever back (we still have those dinosaur lever machines, bless em!), and one of the poll workers stopped her and said "hey we want EVERY vote to count!" and everyone laughed and clapped.

95. I feel good!
We have had voter registration drives here almost since the theft was completed. A lot of the Island folks became citizens just so they could vote, especially the older ones (I talked to a Bajan lady in line that has been here 25 years and recently became a citizen to cast her first vote).

From one sister to another thank you for your post...so many people shed blood for the right to vote and in 2004 we're STILL having to fight this bullshit. But I feel good today, I really do, black folk are PISSED and unified like never before. Chimpy is toast!

106. Preaching to the Choir - Do me a favor..........
Copy and past this post. Then go register on the "Free Republic" and the George Bush boards and post that. I would really love for them to see your post. Perhaps it would make them THINK, something they are usually loath to do............:yourock:

109. US, we do it ourselves. We don't take anymore crap, we stand up
for every single person's right to vote and we (all real Americans, no matter their color, gender, sexuality, etc) don't back down ever, EVER again.
