It's time to: Get Up, Stand Up!!!!
Get up, stand up!
Stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up!
Don't give up your rights!

You preacher man don't tell me
heaven is under the earth
Your a duppy and you don't know
what life is really worth

It's not all that glitters is gold
and half the story has never been told
So now you see the light
we gonna stand up for your rights!
Come on!

(Chorus)

Cause you know most people think
a great God will come from the sky
take away everything
and left everybody dry.

But if you know what life is worth
then you will look for yours on earth
And now you see the light
We gonna stand up for your rights

(Chorus)

We're sick and tired of this game of technology
humbling asking Jesus for his mercy
We know and we understand
Almighty Jah is a Living Man

You fool some people sometimes
but you can't fool all the people all the time
And now you see the light
We gonna stand up for our rights!

(lyrics by Peter Tosh, with Bob Marley)

2. A lot of people have put
serious work into many threads on DU in recent months. (That includes a number that I have strongly disagreed with, but recognized brought up interesting and important topics.) Today it all pays off. We have reason to celebrate our victory, and music is a big part of that.

Today is a festival of life. Keep singing!

26. Roger Waters - The Gunner's Dream (Third Verse Says It All)
Floating down
Through the clouds
Memories come rushing up to meet me now
But in the space between the heavens
And in the corner of some foreign field
I had a dream
I had a dream

Goodbye Max
Goodbye Ma
After the service
When you're walking slowly to the car
And the silver in her hair shines in the cold november air
You hear the tolling bell
And touch the silk in your lapel
And as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band
You take her frail hand
And hold on to the dream

A place to stay
Enough to eat
Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
Where you can speak out loud
About your doubts and fears
And what's more
No-one ever disappears
You never hear their standard issue
Kicking in your door
You can relax on both sides of the tracks
And maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
And everyone has recourse to the law
And no-one kills the children anymore
No-one kills the children anymore

Night after night
Going round and round my brain
His dream is driving me insane
In the corner of some foreign field
The gunner sleeps tonight
What's done is done
We cannot just write off his final scene
Take heed of the dream
Take heed

5. "Redemption Song"
"Redemption Song"

Oh pirates, yes they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit

But my aim was made strong
By the hands of the almighty
We fought in this generation
Triumphantly

Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom
'Cause all I ever had
Redemption song
Redemption song

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them can stop the time

How long shall we kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom
It's all I ever had
Redemption song
Redemption song
Redemption song

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them can stop the time

How long must we kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Some say it's just a part of it
They've got to fulfill the book

I wanna say
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom
'Cause all I ever had
Redemption song

All I ever had
Redemption song
'Cause all I ever had
Redemption song

These songs of freedom
Redemption song
Redemption song
Redemption song

Redemption song
Redemption song
Redemption song

8. Positive Vibration - yay-ah!
If you get down and quarrel everyday
You're saying prayers to the devil, I say
Why not help one another on the way
Make it much easier

Say you just can't live that negative way
If you know what I mean
Make way for the positive day
Cause it's a new day
New time, new feeling yeah!
Say it's a new sign
Oh what a new day

Now chase those crazy baldheads right outta town!

Here in Canada, if Bush were to "win," we'd be expecting a movement of jah people. But I don't think the bastards can fraud their way out of this one.

23. Hey H2O - did you notice that the daughters did not stand with
their folks - they were there, but they could not face the cameras!
I guess they could not be stoic and put on "good faces" with hope and excitement in their eyes. They know they lost!

Thanks for bringing the songs to our hearts!

Happy Election day to you!!!

24. Thank you, Merh!!!
You know, I watched the film and noticed that they weren't there, but it didn't fully sink in until you pointed it out! I was laughing, because George and Laura had the look of defeat written across their faces. "Nostalgic" is how they described it on the news!

This is a great day in American history. And those of us on DU played a small role, like the drop of water in the ocean that we all discussed on the old Plame threads!

Enjoy this day!! And though I rarely have a drink, why, I believe I will take you up on that toast!

27. I think it was Solomon that posted a thank you thread to the DU
tinfoil hatters. He surmised that if it weren't for the conspiracy theorist here on DU, posting the different scenerios that * & rovey might pull when cornered, the probabilities were that they would have made some type of an attack on our nation.

Here's to me, here's to you and here's to all at DU! :toast:

13. This one is dedicated to the Freepers:
i know this is a marley thread, but i'm throwing Floyd in the mix....

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl,
year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

14. It's a Festival of Life thread!
"Get Up, Stand Up" is a Peter Tosh song, though it is often more closely associated with Bob Marley.

I'll be listening to Lennon, Harrison, Hendrix, the Doors, and Richie Havens today .... among others .....

15. hah! I've been blasting the Clash - Combat Rock
during commercials on Air America today. It's getting me pumped.

Funny when I listen to it, especially "Know your Rights" And "Rock the Casbah" how much they apply today....

And i didn't know Peter Tosh wrote Get Up Stand Up.

And on that note...here's one dedicated to Dubya...

The Harder They Come - Jimmy Cliff

well they tell me of a pie up in the sky
waiting for me when I die
but between the day you're born and when you die
they never seem to hear even your cry

So as sure as the sun will shine
I'm gonna get my share now of what's mine
And then the harder they come the harder they'll fall, one and all
Ooh the harder they come the harder they'll fall, one and all

well the officers are trying to keep me down
trying to drive me underground
and they think that they have got the battle won
i say forgive them Lord, they know not what they've done

and I keep on fighting for the things I want
though I know that when you're dead you can't
but I'd rather be a free man in my grave
than living as a puppet or a slave

Yeah, the harder they come, the harder they'll fall one and all
What I say now, what I say now,
What I say now, what I say one time
The harder they come the harder they'll fall one and all
Ooh the harder they come the harder they'll fall one and all

16. Good music!
We need lots of good music and singing today!

The song is the best example of Tosh and Marley working as a team. Kind of like the old Lennon-McCartney efforts, where one has the idea and a start, and the other's addition makes a good song great. Tosh's idea, his music, and the song was about half done when Marley added his contributions.

17. if you're the big tree, we're the small axe...
(and getting bigger by the day ;-)

Why boasteth thyself, oh evil men,
Playing smart and not being clever?
I say you're working iniquity to achieve vanity, yeah,
But the goodness of JAH JAH endureth forever.

If you are the big tree,
We are the small axe.
Sharpened to cut you down,
Ready to cut you down.

These are the words of my master.
Keep on telling me
No weak heart shall prosper,
Oh, no they can't.

And whosoever diggeth a pit, Lord,
Shall fall in it, shall fall in it.
Whosoever diggeth a pit shall bury in it,
Shall bury in it.

If you are the big tree,
We are the small axe
Sharpened to cut you down,
Ready to cut you down.

And whosoever diggeth a pit shall fall in it, fall in it.
Whosoever diggeth a pit shall bury in it, shall bury in it.

If you have a big tree,
We have a small axe
Ready to cut you down,
Sharpened to cut you down.

If you are the big tree,
we are the small axe
Ready to cut you down,
Sharpened to cut you down.

18. If I can add a Ry Cooder that strikes me deeply...
Do You Want My Job

by Ry Cooder

Cool breezes from the mountains blow
As I wake up and dress to go
On the island dawn is breaking
In the harbour tanker`s waiting
From the land of the rising sun
They bring their old plutonium
And we unload it in the bay
For two dollars forty cents a day

Chorus:
Do you want my
Do you want my
Do you want my
Do you want my job

I hump the stuff I take the cash
So my kids can wear Adidas
And if you live here home you know
We ain`t got no place else to go

I remember when the air was sweet
And I brought home the fish to eat
Now we buy Spam from the grocery store
Cause you can eat the fish no more

Chorus

25. The Irish Echo endorsed Kerry
Biggest Irish-American newspaper in the country. It ran weeks of great pro-Kerry articles, LTTE, etc. I'm going to be playing some great Irish music later this afternoon: the Chieftains, and some Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul, among others. I used to play a little with a group from NYC that while not Irish, had advocated for the cause in the 1970s. The way this day is going, I just might be singing a few songs myself. (grin)

28. people get ready
(curtis mayfield, 1964)

People get ready
There’s a train a-coming
You don’t need no baggage
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don’t need no ticket
You just thank the lord

People get ready
For the train to jordan
Picking up passengers
From coast to coast
Faith is the key
Open the doors and board them
There’s room for all
Among the loved the most

There ain’t no room
For the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt all mankind just
To save his own
Have pity on those
Whose chances are thinner
Cause there’s no hiding place
From the kingdom’s throne

So people get ready
For the train a-comin’
You don’t need no baggage
You just get on board !
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don’t need no ticket
You just thank, you just thank the lord

Yeah
Ooh

Yeah
Ooh

I’m getting ready
I’m getting ready
This time I’m ready
This time I’m ready
