Poll question: Should we have made a preemptive war on Iraq? |
|
Since there are many candidates that still seem to support this incursion, I'd like to know how the majority of DU'ers feel.

As a part of the support team for the Weapons Inspectors. Oh, wait a minute...last time we were a part of the teams we were using them as a recon/spying effort on the behalf of the U.S. Military and Intelligence organizations.

I didn't vote because I didn't see the applicable check-box. I was for going into Iraq. They were the worst type of criminals and probably a theat to the U.S. I'm glad they kicked his a$$ out of power but Bush has screwed the pooch on rebuilding the country. No plan there.

Where are the WMDs we were told justified our attack?
On what nation that hasn't attacked us, but might, do you think we should rain down our freedom-bombs next?

10. "probably a threat to the U.S." |
|
Today do you have any evidence that they were indeed a threat? And though I agree Saddam's regime included the worst sort of criminals, were any of those crimes being committed against the US or American citizens?

13. Additional categories are needed |
|
Prior to the war, I got into an argument with two Democratic colleagues about the peace movement. One claimed that if we didn't take out Saddam, Iraq would be a "breeding ground for terrorists." He conceded that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and that there was no credible evidence of any operational link between Al Qaeda and Iraq. But, 9/11 "changed everything" and I "just didn't understand." Nice way of shutting down any rational discussion.
The other thought Saddam was a "bad man" who needed to be taken out. "What other leader has killed so many of his own people?" (I guess some believe that if its not on CNN or Fox, then it doesn't exist). I found the discussion particurly discouraging because these are two highly educated, long-time Democrats--and they bought the lies spread by the media and Bush.
They both support Kerry--and made a special point of telling me that he voted for the war--to prove, I guess, that I was "wrong." The absense of WMD or links to Al Qaeda does nothing to affect their view of the war. I imagine other Kerry supporters would have additional reasons for their candidate's vote (as we have seen on this message board).
The numerous stated grounds for the war merely reveal the absence of any overriding justification. (BTW-I strongly support all of the nine Democratic candidates for President over Bush.)

We should have waited for a true coalition.
It was arrogant to spit on NATO and the UN.
