I'm proud of the Northeastern U.S., where I'm from. I'm proud of the West |
|
Coast. I'm proud as all hell of Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Hawaii.
This is the part of America that made the right choice, that voted smart, that chose the obviously better of two men.
Unfortunately we are forced to live with the choice made by the rest of America, and the world too.

Its like we are a wall of sanity saving those damn red states from falling in the ocean.
I have to remind myself of how many people in those damn red states did the right thing.

4. I live in "red" America now, and I see what makes up the "red" votes. |
|
A combination of greedy selfishness, Bible thump-ism, bigotry, and plain complacent ignorance, with the last being possibly the biggest faction.
Call me bigoted against "red" America, but I'm just calling it as I see it. It is not a pretty picture.

6. I am proud of the northern Big Bend counties of Florida, my new home |
|
Gadsden, Jefferson, and Leon Counties, all of which went for Kerry. They are no Palm Beach or Miami-Dade, but these 3 form a beautiful blue island in a blood-red sea. Proud to live in a wonderful, forward thinking region.

I'm from the Northeast myself and while I've been ashamed of American foreign policy for the past - hell, several decades! - I was never gladder to be a Northeasterner as last night. The one consolation to a Bush "win" is that I and my loved ones are safely tucked away in the center of a mass of blue states, free from the red state nightmare. Insofar as state laws go, we won't be seeing evolution tossed out of the schools here, nor the introduction of any "The Earth was created in six days" nonsense into the educational curriculum. Nor will we see laws passed against homosexuals, compulsory school prayer, the repeal of the state income tax for the wealthy, or any other such atrocities. Should Roe v. Wade go and the decision is left to the states to ban abortion, mine won't be one of them.
Oh, how the Repukes in the blue states must be gloating over the "re-election" of their cabana boy. Let them gloat, for they're not used to voting for the winning candidate, nor will they get used to any such rarity.

The regional elitism I see in this thread is a large part of the reason the democrats lost the South after so many decades of dominance. In order to win in 2008 we will have to draw from the South and Midwest. It is counterproductive to refer to the red states as "wastelands".
Calling the Evangelical Christians "Bible Thumpers", "fundies", "bigots", etc. will not help at all in gaining the states of the Midwest and South. Getting Indiana, Virginia, and North Carolina in our corner would swing the 2008 election our way.
The elitism must stop.
