I think Bush is shaking off Ashcroft for an "appearance" of moderation.
He wants the media to praise him for reaching out to Democrats by choosing a less divisive figure.

Only problem, that person will STILL be a Bush loyalist and no moderate ever maintains their centrism once they declare loyalty to Bush.

3. Who will he bring in?
Hmmmm, Attila the Hun is dead but, I'm sure he'll find someone equally qualified.

4. "appearance" is the key word
His sacrifice of Ashcroft will be celebrated in the press as a major conciliation to reach out and heal America, and one more reason to love him.

But, as with everything His Chimperial Majesty does -- it's a show.

There are people out there just as loony and authoritarian as Ashcroft who do a better job of masquerading as normal people. Like Guiliani. NYC's Most Cherished Fascist who became "America's Major" because his city got bombed. He can be counted on to cloak smirky and dick's and their pals crimes, and smile confidently and charmingly throughout.

7. Huh! Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Of course his replacement will be just as bad (and sneakier) and will probably free the boobs of Liberty (or whoever that statue is) just to throw people off the track!

8. Someone on RW repug talk radio
in Fort Worth, AM 820, wondered aloud a couple of hours ago with his female compatriot why the people who live in New York City and D.C. voted overwhelmingly for Kerry, a man who "you can tell just by looking at him" could never "protect them from terror."

The irony of the statement, of course, is that the man who is supposedly protecting them was the one who allowed it to happen to them to begin with.

9. Ashcroft and Rumsfeld are on their way out
Their policies will remain in place, and that's the problem.

14. Asscrust for supreme court..
remember, he is a "friend" of the senate, and he rounded up all those hookers in NOLA...

and his appointment would make out heads explode...That would be the main reason..

He knows he's gonna have at least FOUR piks on the SCOTUS, he can give one to John..

16. Sad but true...
Rehnquist steps down, Bush names Scalia to replace him as Chief Justice, then tabs Ashcroft to take Scalia's old spot.

Ashcroft then gets to pass judgement on any questions about the constitutionality of his own Patriot Act, and re-opens the issue of "enemy combatants."

bringing in Giuliani...Rudy's not as massive a Jesus freak, and he won't try and ban breasts around the Capitol or whatever.
