Poll question: Would a black Presidential Candidate have a chance in '08 (i.e. Obama)?
Or is America still too... racist?

4. As a southerner, I'd unfortunately have to say... Fuck the South
After the senate losses last night I feel like we need to move on from the south. It's just as repuke as ever right now and we'll have to wait before we can bounce back.

5. Unless his name is Colin Powell...
and the year is 1992 - I say "No" AND it would be much harder for a Democrat than a Repub of Powell's ilk for instance. There's just too much to overcome. I think a White woman has a better shot that a Black man at this point in time. Vice President? Maybe with a REALLY strong Presidential candidate.

6. It depends on the severity of the impending depression
If it is the third worst in American history (behind the 1890's and the Great Depression), we have not yet hit bottom and a black candidate wouldn't stand a chance.

Second worst...possible but highly unlikely.

If the upcoming depression manages to displace the Great Depression as the worst in American history, maybe, just maybe, the sheeple will wake up and realize that racism has been used to manipulate them since the inception of this country. But it would take a hell of a lot of work (of course, by 2008, it might be the only work available).

7. Though I would vote Obama in a heart beat,, living in Texas and
having traveled around many states, sadly it just wouldn't work, nor would a woman president, this administration has pushed us back fifty years I swear in the civil rights department and many southerners seem way overjoyed at that fact...

9. Obama could likely pull it off
His message is SO strong. I live in SC and even my 'nigger-hating' next door neighbor was impressed by him. That's saying a LOT.

If he's allowed to live long enough to get that far, I think he could do it.

10. I think the South is too far gone...
Bless the poor enlightened souls that live down there, but the common attitude in the south is just too far opposed to the principles that I think the Democratic party should stand for. I don't know how we reach them. But all the talk about us not having the south is moot if we carry Ohio this year. Then the pundits would be talking about the fact that the Repugs struggled badly in the north (Indiana would be an island in a sea of blue).

Ideally, a guy like Obama could really energize our base in the blue states and make the south irrelevant. The question would be if he would get enough support in an Ohio or a Missouri, which are more divided.

Truthfully, my dream world would involve some Tom DeLay-style redistricting. The Northeast and Great Lakes will get redistricted into Canada, along with the West Coast. The only down side is that many liberals don't like the cold, and there's only so much room in Southern Cal.

11. Obama won't run in 2008
He won't have even completed a full Senate term. However, I project we'll see him on a presidential ticket in '16 or '20.
