Here's how voting verification could work. |
|
Take your basic Diebold type touchscreen as a starting point.
Enter your choices. Check the summary screen to make sure it's OK. Before you 'register your vote', you hit the last button that generates a paper ballot with your choices printed on it.
If you are voting straight ticket, perhaps the ballot is even color coded. Perhaps it even has PICTURES of the candidates you voted for on it, along with maybe the party symbol.
Check that the paper ballot corresponds with your choices and drop it in a locked box, just like the old days.
Now you may do rapid tallies with the electronic machine, but all the ballots exist on paper in locked boxes.
Mandatory random auditing by bipartisan organization, comparing the lock box paper ballot count with the electronic count in a certain percentage of locations!!!
You still have rapid result delivery with electronics, but you have auditing (must be random and mandatory, with full recount auditing in the case of too close vote or controversy).
And of course all voting machine hardware and software CANNOT BE PROPRIETARY. Designs and code must be inspectable in the public domain.
I'm sure these ideas are not new, but I just thought of this yesterday and wanted to post it...
