We will win the culture war!
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 01:09 AM by The Night Owl
How many social and political defeats did we suffer in the 60s? Many, but we still won the culture war back then. Eventually, we will win this latest culture war.

2. What culture war?
It's like frickin' 1953 up in here. It's like the 60s never even happened. The culture war we're fighting right now is just the same one that was fought in the 60s.

And we will win. We have right on our side.

4. Then maybe...
...everybody needs to move to San Francisco again, drop acid, and run around Golden Gate Park in the buff.

Hey, it worked the first time.

On the other hand, the Love Generation died abruptly and officially in the summer of 1969, when a wild-eyed cult leader with a serious Messiah complex (but who only acted crazy to deflect the reality that he was a very smart con man) sent his brainwashed zombie-minions out to kill in his quest for world domination.

Funny, but I never realized before this very moment how much * has in common with Charlie Manson.

5. I do not think the 60s worked at all.
We still have voter supression for blacks, we have women who have to have back alley abortions, women are still not making 1-1 in wages, education has gone MASSIVELY down hill and we have people who are punished a million times worse for drugs then in the 60s.

9. But... but...
I know all that. I just want the free love, drugs, and groovy demonstrations (sans headbusting). :D

No, seriously, I understand what you're saying, and I wouldn't send this nation back to the 60s for any amount of money. I was speaking strictly in the context of the loosening-up of the stifling Leave It to Beaver-era "morality."

6. And then it'll be coopted again by Corporate America
Unless we do something to subjugate Corporate America at it's core, it'll come out on top again.

That's the trick of capitalism, it will adapt to and assimlate anything it has to in order to survive, cultural movements being one of it's specialties by now.

7. this time we will have to win hearts and minds, not just court cases
we got lazy thinking that the battles were won simply because we won in the courts. hearts and minds are not changed by judicial fiat. it will take a massive, decades long grass roots movement to bring about the changes we progressives envision.

when you get down... remember these words......

“I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.” MLK 4/3/68

8. right you are
that's the real heart of the culture war-- getting people to change their thinking. Man it is slow going. There needs to be more mobility in this country-- more young Kansans going to college in California, stuff like that. We'll never get anywhere as long as the Red Staters can hole up in their bunkers and ignore the rest of the country.
