Anyone else get pushed over the edge of cynicism?
I've always been a fairly cynical person, but in that way that comes about from being an idealist always on the receiving end of dissapointment. And even though I always recognized they weren't perfect, the 90's went a long way towards pulling me up out of that and giving me semblances of hope in my fellow men and fellow americans. It didn't make me a sunny optimist but it led me to believe that all would work out and things were possible with positivity. Well I'm afraid to say that after the past 4 years and culminating in this week, it has pushed me over the edge I've always been teetering on, into complete and utter nihilism. Pure hatred. Tired of the high road and the high minded while mud was being slung my/our way. I don't want to hear about how bad it is to become like them. Honestly: don't care. I'm already there. If someone voted for bush and any number of horrible fates befall them as a result of his myriad horrible policies, they'll have to look for sympathy elsewhere. My hand is no longer outstretched. I have no desire any longer to look into any deeper meaning or understanding of why that person believes what they believe. The fact is that they believe it and their belief is a complete and total choice that they make and have made and will likely continue to make. Well, it's no longer my cross to bear.

I guess the fact that I feel bad about feeling this way is some sort of sign, but I'm sure even that will only last until the first wretched decision or action on the part of bush*.

1. yes
At 27 I feel like I am more cynical than I ever thought I would be at this age. Jaded and cynical. All I can hope for is how when Bush really screws up that the folks who voted for him will see the truth.

I stayed home all day yesterday but I have to go into school/work today. I don't want to even discuss or talk to anyone. Especially the few Nader voting grad students I know.

3. You know, I don't even blame the Nader voters....
Their votes wouldn't have swayed anything. And actually for the first time in 4 years I'm starting to see their point.

God help me.

10. the ones I know are going to be like "told you so"
b/c Kerry stopped fighting and they think we were all duped- I know b/c it has already gone around on our grad student listserve. My anger at Kerry is slowly going away- but nt enough to defend him at this point.

4. Sorta.
I don't know why, but I've reached a sort of plain of wry amusement. I've been laughing my ass off since about an hour after Kerry quit. Think about it! The worst, most inept, evil President in US history was handily reelected by a populace more about gay sex than being lied to in an effort to start a war for profit. I'm sorry, but that's hysterically funny. So, if some Republican idiot starts telling me that their son/daughter/nephew/whatever was killed in Iraq, I'm gonna bust up laughing and say, "Well, at least no one got buttfucked!"

8. Second that
I think that's a great response.

The line between cynicism and realistic thinking is just about gone.

6. I'm with you, Birthmark.
I jumped off the cynicism cliff, but I'm hanging on to a nice big tree root enjoying the view for now. I'll be able to pull myself back up when I'm ready but for now it's just nuts.

9. To an extent.
That said, I have always embraced cynicism as a survival skill. But there is another emotion/response that is real and palpable and dominant in me right now:

Fear. Stinking fear.

14. Yesterday I finally came to the realization
that all I can do is laugh at this situation, keep my family safe (if I can) and pray that there is something left. When these people go down in flames, I want to be on the side watching and being warmed by the fire, be able to take the ashes out and start over.

17. I will be watching too
I sent a congratulatory letter to Bush:

CONGRATULATIONS, YOU DESERVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CLEAN UP THE MESS YOU HAVE MADE IN IRAQ AND USA. I WILL ENJOYING WATCHING THE SHOW.

I will chill out for awhile, enjoy my family, get back to my painting and keep my anger at bay.I will rejoin the battle later!

15. Yep. I'm actually going to enjoy going back to work.
When the gloating little Repubs make snide comments to me, I'm just going to point at them and snicker.

They wanted it, they got it. I tried, but they wanted nothing to do with my ideas. Now, it's THEIR problem to solve.

...and when they get into trouble (well, deeper into trouble, anyway) I'm going to laugh. When they say "What would YOU do about it?", I'll say "Obviously it doesn't matter. YOU obviously had a great plan. Fix it yourself."

...and then I think I'll laugh again.
