How about buying white space on the New York Times?
It may take too long to get a Liberal media going, but is it possible for us to support an organization that can buy white space on the New York Times to get information that we think the American people should know? For example, it took three years to get the information out that our government allowed the bin Laden family to leave after 9/11 without being interviewed. If people knew what we knew and when we knew it, this last election would have played very differently.

Is there any organization that has:

1) Competent investigative reporters who would work pro-bono.
2) Attorneys for possible First Amendment challenges?

This is the quickest and cheapest way to bridge the problem we have with media censors.

Only the most reliable information should be printed. Maybe even include the names of right-wing congressmen who are blocking investigative attempts. Include conflicts of interest information. As the data pans out and verified, it will become obvious to conservative Americans that our newspapers have been withholding information and that we don't really have a Liberal media.

1. Bush voters do not read the NYT
They listen to wingnut radio. The NYT is the voice of the establishment, read mainly by liberals, although it is by no means a liberal paper.

3. The New York Times can be our Drudge.
Think about this for a moment. Do you really think Rush Limbaugh can allow one article to go by without commenting about it? It will be the start of a discourse between the left and the right, because in the following article, we would gather all of his misstatements he makes on the radio about the article and point them out in the newspaper to show right-wing America how incredibly wrong he is.

I'm just using Limbaugh as an example.

I would very carefully pick writers that are bloggers who have fought with the right-wing on the internet and who have successfully beaten them in arguements. What this is, is a repeat of the discourse we have on the internet everyday and forcing it on the front page of the newspaper. No editors, no censor, no moderators.

4. No. You need the New York Times.

Something that will become national news on its own and will trickle to other media on its own right.

6. But it WON'T be national news OR trickle...
Not from the Times... Something like this from the Times will just be regarded as "more of the same" by other media. And the only trickle you may get is to the usual media outlets...a lot of preaching to the choir.

Stuff like this doesn't work effectively coming from a national level...it has to start at the grassroots community level.

8. when building a house ....
one always is more successful when they start by putting in a good foundation to build off of. Starting with the NYTimes is the same as climbing a ladder and trying to build a roof in mid-air. Start small, and build up.

7. There IS a (true) Liberal Media! Read The Nation!
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 10:32 AM by athena
Or The Progressive. Or Mother Jones. Or Ms. These (especially The Nation) ALREADY do excellent investigative journalism. And they need your help to survive! Stop complaining about how there is no liberal media, and SUBSCRIBE!

Edited to add: If everyone subscribes, these will BECOME the mainstream media. Already, The Nation is the highest-circulation political weekly.

10. You would do better
and be far more effective if you start a news service and distribute articles for free to the thousands of weekly newspapers around the country.

Weekly papers are always hurting for stories to fill their pages and will be infinitely for more likely to publish your stuff than the big dailies.

The other alternative is to start a blog. Blogs are the NYT of the future.
