Idea: Handwritten letters to ministers for a start. |
|
What about a letter writing campaign?
Should all the ministers around america should get handwritten letters with photos of dead iraqi civilians and a picture of a homeless family and a big question of what was the sin you chose to speak out on? along with a big SHAME ON YOU !
"If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal"
For those that don't know this is from the Bible. We need to use a language they understand. It can not be charitable that we have no health care for the poor, or the hungry remain unfed while we spend billions to kill people in foreign lands. We are going to have to fight these people in their own language to get them to support ideas they have long supported in caring for the poor, homeless and sick. We are also going to have to mobilize the democrats within the churches to stand up and take stands about issues that really matter to people. We will need to arm them with language and arguments that speak to these people. We can not ignore them and pretend they wont matter on election day. We need to address them and make them deal with the stuff it is they teach .
We also need to have others on the other side that work on the seperation of church and state. These two campaigns can not work together in the same literature or spokesman.

1. what I'd like to see is a well-funded liberal Christian outreach center |
|
This would be a place where the fight could be coordinated against this pseudo-Christian right-wing thuggery.
The way I see it, we need to convince people that Christians ARE liberal. That every single thing that right-wing wacko Christianity stands for is ANTI-CHRISTIAN.

2. I was thinking about something like this |

We can remind them of the words of Jesus-- not just Paul. I love when Jesus denounced the scribes and the Pharisees in Matthew 23-- he gave them a royal smackdown. If anyone gets a chance to read it, please do.

4. might as well write hand-written letters to the Gotti family |
|
The guys who run these fundy churches and TV stations are like organized crime bosses. The have a very lucrative enterprise that pays no taxes and provides them with virtually unlimited funds to lead decadent lifestyles (see: Paul Crouch). They will say and support absolutely anything that pushes the parishoners buttons to keep the donations flowing and the rallying point right now seems to be bloodthirsty Old Testament-style revenge killing of as many Arab people as possible. They have no shame.

5. I like your intentions . . |

. . but I worry about the underlieing reality.
Liberal Christianity is not-evangelical by definition. It is based on people coming to Jesus on their own terms - not from the exhortations of some bible thumper.
It's like being radically middle-of-the-road, politically.
