Losing an election is like breaking up with someone
When you commit to a party and an individual you want to do it with your heart and with your soul because your values are a good match and you want to make a future together. You're ready to be a part of something bigger than yourself and you're willing to do the work to make it happen.

But then, things don't work out like you wanted them too. And you're left alone, questioning your self-worth, if it was all your fault, and going over history and second-guessing everything you did and said, and how thing might have been different and you beat yourself up over it.

You cry, eat a little chocolate, maybe drink too much. You wallow in your misery and self-pity for awhile until you know that the world is still out there and you're going to go out and get back in it.

You need friends around you to tell you you're still fabulous and anyone would be crazy not to love you for who you are.

And sooner or later, you believe them again, lift your head, open your heart and smile, and you're ready to love again.

1. oh my god, it is so odd you posted this
because I am having the exact same physical symptoms I had during my last major break up - can't sleep, can't eat, stomach in knots, when I do sleep for a while I wake up wondering what that feeling of dread is...

2. I totally agree with you and I'm still feeling
like a member of my family has passed away.

I'm slightly better today only b/c i actually got a few hours of sleep last night so I can function a tad better.

Hang in there. We're all in this together.

3. And this is what I mean when I keep harping about...
The need, the immediate and critical need for leaders now. Now, I do not mean saviours, THEM has the saviour. Nor do we need these half-cocked street actions that are cropping up hither and thither. That will only serve to piss of off the people we wish to attract.

Right now we are all drifting aimlessly and that ain't helpful. We have been in this thing since this place opened its doors and for the last two years we have been the footsoldiers, the cavalry and the armour.

Right now, we NEED officers. We NEED the DNC, Moveon, ACT and all the other responsible organizations to keep us mobilized and focused and trained to a razor's edge. Aimless drifting will only serve the aims of THEM. THEM will take full advantage of this.

They got to this place through full-time mobilization and thoughtful tactics. We need this NOW, if we are to have a prayer.

Where are those with the gravitas to step up. I am ready to hoist the weapons of my heart if they do.

8. Yup. My Democratic Club meets tonight and another grassroots org I'm in
meets tomorrow.

I'm going to both meetings to be there for everyone else. I'm not the only one I know going through this.

Just like a bad breakup, being self-destructive isn't the answer right now.

6. Remember... Hope for the future did not die, only hope for one election.
For me, losing an election is more like not getting laid after trying real hard to put the moves on someone. I think we'd do better if we spent the next four years getting to know the people whom we want to win over.

7. This election loss is far far worse than that
It is like having a close friend or family member die right in front of your eyes - a slow and painful death.

America is dead to me. Already the fundies are fighting for the morsels of hard won victory in the White House....which morsel shall they start with - social security....or permanent tax cuts....or repealing the estate tax....lets outlaw gays altogether....womens rights - who needs em....anti segregation laws - never liked them blackies anyways.....

What power do we have to counter this onslaught??? We have nothing.

I shudder to think of the mischief they can impose upon us all. The political process is BROKEN - and there is no way to fix it. Perhaps it is time to revolt.
