I've posted this before, but it bears repeating.

Pat Buchanan -- regardless of what you think of him -- is relatively dispassionate when it comes to simple analysis. He says that this is the highwater mark for repubs, it's all downhill from here thanks mainly to demographics.

Repubs are aging / white -- nation is not.

Nixon and Reagan both took 49 states in their second elections -- Bush didn't get one blue state (IA still out) and lost a red one.

4 SW states will be Dem by 2008 -- CO already elected a Hispanic Dem senator and their legislature went blue this year.

My view is that culturally they are on the wrong side of history too --
their floor is also their ceiling.
