My letter to Senator Dick Durbin
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 07:53 PM by Hippo_Tron
Dear Senator Durbin.

It's certainly been a bad week for America and especially for the democratic party. The re-election of president Bush and the Republican gains of the United States Senate will certainly prove disasterous to the progress of our nation. Senator, I know that you are wondering why somebody from New Orleans, Louisiana would be writing to you to tell you all of this. I am writing because I am very concerned with the leadership of the democratic party. As we all know, Senator Daschle unfortunately lost his seat on Tuesday Night and thus, the democrats must choose a new senate leader. Rumor has it, that Minority Whip Harry Reid has secured the votes to take this job. While I know that Harry Reid is an honest and decent man who does work hard for his constituents and his party, I, as well as many others, feel that his stance on a woman's right to choose is completely unacceptable for a leader of the democratic party. Along with this, many also feel that Senator Reid is not a strong enough voice to stand up to President Bush on many other issues. Senator, I write to you because I want to encourage you to seek the job of Senate Democratic Leader. For the past four years, you have shown great courage in standing up for your convictions and speaking out against the horrible policies of this administration. You have spoken out when others kept silent and got in line with the administration. Along with the late Senator Wellstone, you are the most powerful voice that progressives have had on capitol hill for many years. Senator, the democratic party needs a strong leader, who will not be afraid to speak out against the Bush administration, no matter what. With your strong leadership, the democratic message would be succesfully carried out to millions of Americans who are disappointed with this administration's policies. Senator, I would like to put this as simply as possible: Your country and your party need you and we need you very badly. I seriously hope that you will consider seeking the position of Senate Democratic Leader for the 109th congress.

Sincerely

Alex

Come to think of it I should've spaced it out a little bit but the form on that page is so tiny that it was hard to figure out where to line break.

1. alex now get back in there
and write him and any other democrat that represents you, about the massive fraud that has been pulled. we need to stop it this time. we already got jobbed in 2000 and 2002 and look what they have done. it is obvious we have vastly superior numbers no matter what they say.

5. Durbin is a good guy.
I think he's going to be minority whip, though.

(By the way, expect a quick reply from his staff. I think I heard from him the day after I contacted him about paperless voting.)

6. I'm not expecting a reply because I'm not in Illinois...

But if I did get one, that would be awesome. And if he's going to be minority whip, I guess I could live with that. I just really wish that we wouldn't put Harry Reid at the helm.

7. There's a case to be made for Reid, I suppose.
Like that he's going to be the patsy and if dems come out smelling like roses, we'll get Nevada.
Or the pork he could bring to Nevada could turn it blue.

It's all shit I don't believe. First, if the dems come out smelling like roses, we win Nevada with or without having the minority leader there. Plus, I don't see any indication of republicans embracing rational thought by '06. Look at what happened to our last minority leader, although SD isn't a swing state.

I think I speak for most dems when I say I want a solid blue state's senator simply because he should be focused on the country's interests, not his own job. There's going to be--strike that, there SHOULD be--a lot of 'tough' decisions to make, that is, if you've got a barely-red electorate.

Our senate leader shouldn't have to worry about being cut down anymore. I don't know why that isn't apparent, but it isn't.

If the dem leadership truly thinks that its our job to become centrist, then I'm leaving the party because they no longer represent my interests.

Kerry would make a terrible minority leader because being a former candidate would make his actions just seem punitive.

9. I think that our senate leader definately should be a liberal
When it comes time to field another candidate for president, I can accept a moderate so long as he can embrace traditional democratic values like a woman's right to choose, healthcare for all Americans, etc. The president has to represent the entire electorate, the senate minority or majority leader has to represent his party's interests and act as an attack dog if the incumbent president is of the opposite party. Tom Daschle is a great guy but he was definately a weak leader in many respects. I fear that Reid is not only too moderate, but too weak to lead the party. Durbin, on top of being a great senator who connects very well with his constituents, is a leader. Whenever there was a hot issue on the senate floor that was being discussed on DU this year, you could bet that Durbin was out there fighting the Bush administration every step of the way. Ideally I would actually like to see him run for President but I don't see that as likely, considering that's not the direction that our party is going in. But I know for a fact that he would make a great senate leader, even if the consensus is that we do need to have moderate presidential candidates.

10. My major concern is that we don't see another Daschle.
It's fucking pathetic we lose our minority leader. That should never, ever happen. Take them and the whips from the blue states.

8. Great letter and Dick Durbin WILL answer you!
he emails me, himself, all the time. He's a great man and I hope he heeds what you say. I would love him to be the Minority leader.

What is Harry Reid's position on abortion? Is he anti-choice? :scared:

11. I've just E-mailed him as well.
Durbin as minority leader makes much more sense than reid. Put Kerry or Kennedy or Clinton as whip.

No more Daschles.
