5. NPR Had A Story
NPR had a story on how the Europeans were boycotting American Iconic brands like Coke, American Airlines, Nike etc....

The fact people are not buying these American associated brands have accounted for a 20 % drop in world wide sells.

Perhaps if the Blues picked ONE major company (perhaps the one that gave the most to the Republican Campaign) and decided not to buy its products...it might make a difference where it counts....the pocket book

18. They are called garage sales.
Or go to the Dollar Store, ebay, Costco or simply make do with less plastic crap.

Every dollar you spend at Wal-Mart is another bullet in a Chinese union leaders head or a lost job in the states.

If you care about human rights, but are to lazy to stop shopping at Wal-Mart then you don't deserve to live in a free society.

21. Hey.. that almost covers my bases
CostCo sounds like a great idea.

But eBay? Garage sales? I can't buy lunchmeat there.

Let me think..what do I buy from Walmart? Deodorant, Q-tips, other bathroom stuff.. fiber...
Sam's Club: lunch meat, low carb tortillas... um.. i think that's about it.

So where am I supposed to get my bathroom products and cleaners?

23. OK.. let's take this another step further
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 09:40 PM by PotatoBoy
I save money by shopping at Walmart. Maybe not after a couple visits..but over the course of a year, I'm sure I save at least a couple hundred bucks or more.

Here's an example. Fiber. It's $5 everywhere except Walmart ($4.50). I'm not kidding.. Target, Walgreens, etc..$4.99.

I go through about two boxes of it .. uh..

Hold the phone. Wait. Amazon.com has a box for not $4.99..not $4.50.. but GET THIS: $3.65!!

WOW. And it's eligible for free shipping (orders of $25+).

There goes Walmart :) Thanks for giving me the opportunity to reevaluate my purchases.

EDIT: you know what pisses me off??? I DID a low price search for Metamucil via froogle.com and pricegrabber.com. NEITHER of them showed Amazon. Assholes. The lowest price they showed was like $4.16. Add shipping to that and that kills the deal.

24. Don't forget to use coupons to keep costs down
Also remember to use coupons every time you grocery shop, etc. Using coupons helps drive costs down to WalMart levels and oftentimes lower if you can become skilled at saving money, and the manufacturer has to pay the store, not the consumer. :)

It may seem like small amounts, but it does all add up.

26. More suggestions:
Cleaning products: make your own - do a websearch for inexpensive "green" recipes - save money & the environment

Paper towels, napkins: use cloth instead - again, save money & the environment

For cleaning products, canned goods, paper products: watch your local grocery store sales & stock up

Food: shop local farmer's markets, neighborhood bakeries, etc - support your small local businesses instead of big corporations

Instead of buying packaged foods which support big corporations, consider making your own bread, soup, chili, etc.

If you must shop at a big discount store, choose Target over Walmart

33. Home-made cleaning solutions are easy.
Dump a small bottle of white vinegar and half a small box of baking soda in a bucket of water - the best cleaning solution for cabinets, woodwork, even floors!

Dirty windows? Use balled up newspaper and vinegar-water.

can stick to it. The other stores are NOT that much more expensive if you work a little at it. Walmart has just made it too convenient and Americans like their convenience!

I'm trying to drive this into my mom's thick democratic skull!! She swears she can't afford to shop anywhere else - I told her to enjoy the next few installments of her social security payments - bye bye!

17. I know it is hard, but if we all cancelled cable/satellite AND sent
a letter explaining why (referencing the corporate take-over and corruption of network and cable media and with copies to GE, Viacom, Disney, Murdock)....

We could all make do with rental videos and movies, with an occasional foray to a sports bar for something really special, right?

I have been going though the shows I enjoy on tv (and I already don't get Comedy central or any premium cable stations).... frankly, I don't think I'd miss it so much. Maybe just maintain my DSL subscription, learn to enjoy radio and music more. books, and see if I can't become the productive person I once was?..............

For any of these campaigns to work, it would take major numbers of us committed to doing so..... more than just DU. We would need to enlist support to a common campaing from DU, and all the major progressive forums and blogs. Thoughts anyone?

I admit I have gone to Wal-Mart up until I became really politically aware four years ago. I never go there now. But I still spend a hell of a lot of money on products from big supporters of the right-wing. Maybe most of it!!
The way I see it, this isn't just being petty. This is serious. Our democracy is in the hands of lunatics and we have to get serious about it too. I'm going to investigate every cent I make and refuse to spend anymore of my money on their stuff. The media is going to be number one for me. No more CNN, MSNBC or any of them. As long as I have the internet, I can keep well informed. Better informed, actually. It would be great if someone out there on our side with some money would start investing in big media news. (hint hint)
I wish other people would get serious about this too and start a movement. This is a way we can make our numbers be seriously felt and paid attention to. We are at least 49% of the population (or more if you believe there is election tampering going on, and I do.) Believe me, hitting these people in the pocketbook is what bothers these people more than anything else. Our vote was stolen but sometimes it's more powerful to vote with the pocketbook.

I won't shop at Wal Mart. However, I will go in, fill carts with meat and other perishables, and then leave the cart in a less than busy aisle. Ladies lingerie?!~ Maybe gouge holes in the pre-wrapped chicken. but first, go to the book kiosks, find a 2 dollar copy of Sean Hannity's newest paint by numbers and place every single copy on top of the pile of 100 lbs of chicken breasts in the cart.

Maybe some tea?

44. always buy from locally owned businesses
pick ones where you know the owners, if you can, so you know their politics.

Boycott Christmas. Buy for the kids only. (Sorry, I can't be a scrooge but since my son is 21 I plan on discussing this with him tomorrow. He's very pissed about the election, very dem.)

Boycott Walmart and Home Depot. I've never been in a Walmart and stopped going to Home Depot when I learned of their policits.

It would be easier if we picked a product and spread the word. We'd need someone like Michael Moore to help us. I've not had a Coors beer for 30 years. Old habits die hard. Didn't do any good (except to my pride) but the grape boycott helped the farm workers.

45. The new South Park is about "The Wall-Mart"
One of the funniest ever. The town found the 'heart' of the Wall Mart, and by destroying it it disappeared into the 'void'. Then they started shopping at the local drug store, which became a super store, then they burned that down because it dominated their lives.

The parting words of the show were Stan's Dad;

"Let's not make that mistake again'.

Buy Local!

I've turned on my TV fewer than a dozen times since January 2004, other than to check out C-SPAN. It's amazing how much like an addiction it is, and how great I feel to have given it up. So much garbage!!! Any shows I like, I borrow DVDs from someone or rent from Netflix. (please don't tell me they donated to Bush...)

Even those who watch just "to know what the enemy is saying" are still letting the issues be framed by commercial media.

58. I avoid Wal-Mart for a variety of reasons.
They exploit workers and their owners are right wing loonies (very big funders of school vouchers). I do not watch cable news at all, and rarely watch local TV news. I have a MBNA credit card but rarely use it.

I try to buy secondhand stuff and at holiday time, I do a lot of baking. My family does a lot of shopping at Costco and Target. My husband does go to Home Depot a bit, but there are few other alternatives where we live.
